Yang Wan-li's Status and Influence in the Development of the Poetry in the Southern Song Dynasty

According to the critics of the Southern Song Dynasty, Yang Wan-li was a better poet than Lu You. And in Yan Yu's opinion, Yang Wan-li was the only Southern Song poet that displayed a style. It can be safely said that, although Lu You had greater achievements as a versatile man of letters, Yang Wan-li the poet showed more creative power. This essay is an attempt to establish Yang Wan-li's status in the development of poetry in the Southern Song Dynasty, by assessing the tremendous influence he exerted on such famous names as Liu Ke-zhuang, Zhang Ci, Jiang Kui, the four wits of the Yongjia Circle and the Jianghu School, as well as his influence clearly felt in the following dynasties of Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing. And in the process, the negative criticism is not overlooked.
