An exploration of Chinese Idioms" Literal Translation

An idiom is the essence of Chinese,which reflects the features of Chinese culture.This paper discusses the feasibility and performances of literal translation,as well as differences between literal translation and word-for-word translation from aspects of theoretical basis,connotation and functions of literal translation.During the translation process,literal translation makes the target and the source texts equivalent in form,content and functions,conveying Chinese culture at the same time.It is one of the principal and effective methods in translating Chinese idioms into English.
