| Abstract: | The occurrence of a tragedy is not isolated or sheerly accidental. Instead, it is the result of confrontations between people and society. The tragedy of Tess was created by the wicked society of her time. Feudal and traditional morality and ethics, social evil forces and reactionary religion, capitalist law system as well as the country's bourgeois machinery should all be held responsible as direct or indirect causes for the tragedy of Tess. |
