A Comparative Study of ZHAO Shu-li and ZHANG Ai-ling

ZHAO Shu-li and ZHANG Ai-ling,two accomplished writers of the 1940s,developed different styles in their common search for folk tradition. This is partly due to the two politically distinct areas in which they lived and the different expectations from their respective audiences, and partly due to their enormously different breeding and social milieus. While both seeking to get inspiration from the traditional Chinese culture, they were inspired by different, or even opposite, aspects of it and thus followed two different routes: ZHAO engaged in the delineation of rural China,while ZHANG absorbed in the landscape of urban humanity.
