| Abstract: | The basic significance of the English comparative construction is to compare the difference between two things of the same kind. However there are more implications in it than meet the eye. The comparative construction has its noticeable rhetorical functions. The paper, by the analysis and categorization of a good number of sentence instances, summarizes its rhetorical functions in six respects: euphemism, simile, irony, antithesis hyperbole, and emphasis. Thus English comparative construction has gone far beyond the semantic category of the comparative. |
