This article explores three clues necessary to grasp in reading Luxun's A Madman's Diary which defies interpretation. The clues are: fantasy and rationality coexist; the writing is both realistic and symbolic; the classical Chinese and the vernacular is employed in the same version. The paper elaborates on how the social and cultural traditions form and change the populace's character, how the ruling class or those who stick to the old ways retaliate and suppress their opponents.
