The creation of female characters is one of the main features in William Faulkner’s novels.The "shadow nature" is indispensable on these characters,and it is rooted deeply in the social reality in North America then,which converts them into the shadow characters in society.Thus,their shadow nature in Faulkner’s artistic creation just reflects their shadow nature in reality.Through the analysis of Addie Bundren’s "shadow nature" in As I Lay Dying,we aim to explore the physical and psychological destruction of nihilism and traditional female virtues on women to assist readers in regarding the female characters in Faulkner’s novels more objectively in appreciating Faulkner’s works more comprehensively,and in understanding his humanism more profoundly.
