美亚协会争取修改排华法案的努力

American Asiatic Association's Efforts to Modify the Chinese Exclusion Laws

During the period from 1904 through 1907, the American Asiatic Association, under the leadership of John Ford, its secretary, launched a campaign to modify the Chinese Exclusion Laws. Their efforts started with a sharply criticism of the America's immigration system, then with an increasing pressure on the Theodore Roosevelt's administration. After anti-American boycott broke out in China in late 1905, American Asiatic Association, lobbied futilely for the Foster Bill's passage in Congress. There are two underlying reasons for American Asiatic Association's failure. First, American Asiatic Association's aim is the maintenance of the open-up of China's market to America's commerce, rather than Chinese people's just rights. Secondly, they have underestimated the force of unleashed Chinese nationalism.
