A Corpus-Based Research into Metaphors of "and"

With the help of corpus,Alice et al conducted researches into some notional words such as perception verbs,"shred","heated" and "deep",etc.,while few researches have been done into the metaphorical meanings of function words.This paper focuses on metaphorical meanings of "and" when it is used to link two clauses.By analyzing its metaphorical meanings in connecting clauses extracted from Sound & Fury and BROWN,it is concluded that the metaphors of "and" can be interpreted as mapping its grammatical functions into the relationship of connecting processes of two clauses,apart from its meaning projections from one word domain into another.
