On Hu Linyi's Military Ideology

During the period from 1850s to 1860s, for the purpose of suppressing Revolution of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and meeting the demand of combining offensive warfare with defensive one, which involve both cold and hot weapons simultaneously, Hu Linyi stands for a reform in the military system of Qing Dynesty, including substituting a military-political system of recruiting for hereditary system, and enhancing the administration and training of military forces. At the same time, Hu proposes the strategies of initiative player against passive player and upper-reach player against lower-reach player, and also puts forword the tactics of besieging a city to ambush enemy reinforcement. There is the essence as well as the dross in Hu's military ideology, which has a great influence at Hu Linyi's time and afterwards.
