Symbols in The Assistant

Symbolism is one of the important techniques Malamud likes employing in his writing. In his masterpiece The Assistant, symbolism constitutes a major feature of its artistic achievement. In this novel, Malamud makes full use of symbolism in the construction of structure, the arrangement of plot and the creation of setting, which has importance in the portrayal of character, the exposition and deepening of theme. This paper attempts to deal with the use of symbolism in the above mentioned aspects.
