| Abstract: | This essay discusses the function and requirements of cultural empathy in cross-cultural communication from the aspect of linguistic politeness. The empathy towards the politeness strategies of another culture requires the speaker to understand the different politeness principles and strategies of that culture, to have an attitude of equality and empathetic competence. With empathy as a media, politeness strategies as measures, cultural gaps can be bridged. |
