There has been a long history with the private book\|collecting activities full of cultural connotation in ancient China. The culture of private book\|collecting should be found to take a special place as a distinctive phenomenon in our traditional culture. For the understanding mentioned above, the article tries to synthesize the related research by the people both dead and alive. On the basis of the synthesis, the author has summarized five fundamental cultural characteristics of the private book\|collecting activities in ancient China, and each characteristic is followed by a detailed explanation.
