The Application of Cooperative Learning in Foreign Language Classroom

Cooperative learning is a learner- centered teaching methodology. It originated in the United States and is now widespread in many countries in the world. In cooperative learning, learners work in small groups for a shared learning goal in which they promote each other's learning and at the same time each member becomes a stronger individual in his or her right. Research indicates that cooperative learning is effective for any learner types and any subject areas. This article discusses the application of cooperative learning in foreign language classroom. It consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction to cooperative learning. The second part analyses the theoretical bases of using cooperative learning in foreign language teaching, while the last part provides some cooperative learning methods fit for foreign language classroom.
