| 摘 要： | 美国高校通识教育的源起及其发展至今有一百多年的历史，其教育理念和实践充分体现了美国的思想政治教育特色。当今我国许多高校也在实施通识教育，在通识教育的视野下，我国高校的思想政治教育存在着教育外在化的缺失即重视“何以为生”而放弃了“为何而生”的教育。同时，在经济全球化背景下，高校教育存在着谋生手段为“有限目的”与人的自由全面发展为“无限目的”的矛盾。本文从这一背景出发，对美国高校通识教育的本质、特征及其通识教育中的思想政治教育特色及功能进行分析，旨在为我国高校思想政治教育提供有益的借鉴。
