理性如冰 浪漫似水-卢梭浪漫主义简析

The Ice of Rationality and Water of Romanticism -- a brief analysiss of Rousseau' s Romanticism

As a trend of cultural movement in modern western philosophy, Romantic ism began at the end of 18th century with the fundamental characteristic of resp ect for human feelings as a contrast to rationalism of the Enlightenment Movemen t. The turn of philosophical interest can be traced to Rousseau, who is more of a great thinker with oriental wisdom rather than a founder of a new thought syst em. In fact, Rousseau is not against "reason" but "intellectuality" as a kind of rationalism in the narrow sense. He is a rationalized romanticist, whos e rationalism goes beyond intellectuality with attainment of higher state of "r ationalism," i.e., the "sensible intellect." The combination or conflict of t he two can be seen in the integrate whole of his thought system, which appears t o be a unity of opposites like ice and water with difference in form but affinit y in quality. The true peculiarity lies in its infusing the warmth of feelings i nto the cold, stiff rationalism to revive the whole world in health and vitality .
