张謇论会党

会党是一种秘密社会的组织,源远流长,至晚清已经发展到全国各地,江苏自然也不例外。张謇作为地方知名人士,在甲午战争、义和团运动、辛亥革命和北洋军阀时期,均对会党及会党人物发表了自己的看法。概而言之,他在对外关系紧张期间利用会党是为了攘外安内。在国内政治斗争中则以安定地方确保治安为准绳,符合这一标准的就肯定,不符合这一标准的就否定,而不管当事人是否具有会党身份或经历。这一基本态度反映了张謇民族资本家的阶级属性。

Zhang Jian's Comment on Huidang (Secret Group Party)

Huidang is a kind of organization of secret society with a long history,and was spread all over the China (including Jiangsu)in the later Qing Dynasty.Zhang,as a local celebrity,expressed his own perspective on Huidang and its members.He proposed to motivate Huidang to fight back against foreign forces and safeguard public security during diplomatic tension or conflicts.His proposition set the public security as the sole criterion in appraisal of Huidang's func- tion,which was in line with his class attributes as a national capitalist.
