This work is an investigation about the relative effectiveness of two approaches to scheduling in flexible flow shops: one approach advocating the possible use of different dispatching rules at different stages of the flow shop, and the other suggesting the use of the same dispatching rule at all the stages of the flow shop. In the latter approach, the dispatching rule contains the information related to both process time and duedate. Both approaches aim at the minimization of measures related to flowtime and tardiness of jobs. This paper essentially is an attempt at exploring the relative effectiveness of these two approaches to scheduling.  相似文献

The literature on job scheduling recognizes the importance of due date performance criteria such as mean tardiness and maximum tardiness. A number of studies test a large number of sequencing rules for these criteria in job shop and flow shop settings. The object of this present research is to examine the performance of some well-known priority rules in a flow shop with multiple processors. This study investigates the performance of ten priority rules in terms of mean and maximum tardiness. It examines the effects of problem characteristics, such as number of jobs, number of machines stages and number of parallel processors at each stage, and the performance of priority rules using regression analysis. The findings of the study suggest that the primary determinants of tardiness-based criteria are problem characteristics. In addition, both the regression analysis and the analysis of variance provide strong evidence of the strategy-effect. Finally, a detailed performance review of examined priority rules for various problem characteristics is presented.  相似文献

Most job shop scheduling approaches reported in the literature assume that the scheduling problem is static (i.e. job arrivals and the breakdowns of machines are neglected) and in addition, these scheduling approaches may not address multiple criteria scheduling or accommodate alternate resources to process a job operation. In this paper, a scheduling method based on extreme value theory (SEVAT) is developed and addresses all the shortcomings mentioned above. The SEVAT approach creates a statistical profile of schedules through random sampling, and predicts the quality or 'potential' of a feasible schedule. A dynamic scheduling problem was designed to reflect a real job shop scheduling environment closely. Two performance measures, viz. mean job tardiness and mean job cost, were used to demonstrate multiple criteria scheduling. Three factors were identified, and varied between two levels each, thereby spanning a varied job shop environment. The results of this extensive simulation study show that the SEVAT scheduling approach produces a better performance compared to several common dispatching rules.  相似文献

In this paper, a Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) is proposed to derive the optimal machine-wise priority dispatching rules ( pdrs ) to resolve the conflict among the contending jobs in the Giffler and Thompson (GT) procedure applied for job shop problems. The performance criterion considered is the weighed sum of the multiple objectives minimization of makespan, minimization of total idle time of machines and minimization of total tardiness. The weights assigned for combining the objectives into a scalar fitness function are not constant. They are specified randomly for each evaluation. This in turn leads to the multidirectional search in the proposed MOGA, which in turn mitigates the solution being entrapped in local minima. The applicability and usefulness of the proposed methodology for the scheduling of job shops is illustrated with 28 benchmark problems available in the open literature.  相似文献

This research addresses the problem of scheduling technicians to travel from customer site to customer site to perform emergency maintenance on office machines, computers, robots, telecommunications equipment, medical equipment, heating/cooling equipment, household appliances, and other equipment. We call this the Traveling Technician Problem (TTP). In its simplest form, the TTP is a multiserver, sequence-dependent, tardiness minimization problem. This research frames the TTP as a service quality maximization problem in which service quality is defined in terms of mean tardiness, mean technician phone response time, mean promise time, and mean response time. Tardiness is defined with respect to contractually guaranteed response times. Industry practice is to use dispatching rules to assign service calls to technicians. This research proposes scheduling procedures to maximize field service quality in a dynamic environment. A simulation experiment was used to compare three dispatching rules and three scheduling procedures for the TTP. The scheduling procedures dominated the dispatching rules on all four service quality measures. The proposed scheduling procedures hold promise for improving service quality in a wide variety of field service organizations and in other scheduling environments as well.  相似文献

This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the typical scheduling environment in semiconductor manufacturing involving multiple job families, and where more than one objective such as cycle time, machine utilization and the due-date accuracy needs to be simultaneously considered. In this study, the NP-hard problem of scheduling N independent jobs on a single testing machine with due dates and sequence-dependent setup times is addressed, where the multiple objectives are to minimize average cycle time, to minimize average tardiness, and to maximize machine utilization. A Pareto optimal solution, which is not inferior to any other feasible solutions in terms of all objectives, is generated combining the analytically optimal and conjunctive simulated scheduling approach. First, the machine-scheduling problem is modeled using the discrete event simulation approach and the problem is divided into simulation clock based lot selection sub-problems. Then, a Pareto optimal lot is selected using the compromise programming technique for multiobjective optimization at each decision instant in simulated time. With the help of a broad experimental design, this developed solution is then compared with common heuristic-dispatching rules such as SPT and EDD, which show better results for all the objectives over a wide range of problems. The developed scheduling method shows approximately 16.7% reduction in average cycle time, 25.6% reduction in average tardiness, and 21.6% improvement in machine utilization over the common dispatching rules, SPT and EDD.  相似文献

Although the academic contribution to job shop scheduling is abundant, its impact on practice has been minimal. The most preferred approach to job shop scheduling in the industry is dispatching rules. A major criticism against dispatching rules is that there is no single universal rule. The effective choice of dispatching rules depends on the scheduling criterion and existing job shop conditions. In this paper, the authors have proposed a scheduling method based on the analytic hierarchy process, that dynamically selects the most appropriate dispatching rule from several candidate rules. The selection is based on the existing job shop conditions. This method is applied to two formal job shop problems, and the results for single dispatching rules are inferior to the method proposed in this paper.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study is to examine the performance of order-based dispatching rules in a general job shop, where the environmental factors are shop utilization and due date tightness. An order is defined as a collection of jobs that are shipped as a group—an order—to the customer, only on completion of the last job of the order. We specifically compare dispatching rules from past job-based studies to some rules adapted to encompass order characteristics. Standard flow time and tardiness measures are used, but in addition, we introduce measures that combine average performance with variation in an attempt to capture the performance of a majority of the orders processed in the shop. Of the 16 dispatching rules tested, our results show that four of the simple rules dominate the others. We also found that order-based rules perform better than their job-based counterparts. The study makes use of multivariate statistical analysis, in addition to the usual univariate tests, which can provide additional insight to managers using multiple criteria in their decision process.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a study of the use of heterogeneous dispatching rules for the scheduling of work in a job shop. The methodology employed included discrete event simulation, using rule combinations determined by prior genetic algorithm searches and generalization using neural networks. Eight dispatching rules were considered, including first in first out (FIFO), earliest due date ( EDD), shortest processing time (SPT), slack/ number of operations (SLK), critical ratio (CR), modified due date (MDD), modified operation due date (MOD), and apparent tardiness cost (ATC). A three-machine job shop was studied, in which three work organizations were employed, pure flow (fixed sequence), pure job shop ( random sequence), and a hybrid shop where flow is random but with unequal probabilities. Three levels of machine loading were used and average tardiness was used as the performance measure. In most cases, modified due date and apparent tardiness cost were the best rules. The application of the best rules effected the results primarily when applied to bottleneck machines or the first machine in a pure flow shop. Nearly any other rule was acceptable on non-botdeneck machines except FIFO and CR, which consistently perform poorly. No major advantage of mixing rules was found.  相似文献

A new fuzzy logic dispatching method is presented ff which o ers an improvement over certain existing common dispatching rules with respect to the performance measures, number of late parts, maximum part lateness, average producff tion times and machine bu er levels. The fuzzy logic dispatcher incorporates a wider range of scheduling issues than those considered by most dispatching rules, considers certain control ff issues that e ect scheduling, contains mechanisms for optimization and also allows for the addition of more control or scheduling rules.  相似文献

This paper presents a time-indexed integer programming formulation for scheduling dependent jobs executed by a team of workers in an area contaminated with radio-active or chemical materials. The dynamics of the harmful factor and the norms of organism recovery imply that each work period for a job should be immediately followed by a rest period for the worker executing this job and the length of the rest period depends on the start time of the corresponding work period. The problem is modeled as an NP-hard problem of scheduling on unrelated parallel processors with start time dependent processing times and different objective functions: maximum or total completion time and maximum or total tardiness. The special case of scheduling jobs executed by a single worker is also considered. Numerical examples and some computational results are reported.  相似文献

In the multiprocessor scheduling problem to minimize the total job completion time, an optimal schedule can be obtained by the shortest processing time rule and the completion time of each job in the schedule can be used as a guarantee for scheduling revenue. However, in practice, some jobs will not arrive at the beginning of the schedule but are delayed and their delayed arrival times are given to the decision-maker for possible rescheduling. The decision-maker can choose to reject some jobs in order to minimize the total operational cost that includes three cost components: the total rejection cost of the rejected jobs, the total completion time of the accepted jobs, and the penalty on the maximum tardiness for the accepted jobs, for which their completion times in the planned schedule are their virtual due dates. This novel rescheduling problem generalizes several classic NP-hard scheduling problems. We first design a pseudo-polynomial time dynamic programming exact algorithm and then, when the tardiness can be unbounded, we develop it into a fully polynomial time approximation scheme. The dynamic programming exact algorithm has a space complexity too high for truthful implementation; we propose an alternative to integrate the enumeration and the dynamic programming recurrences, followed by a depth-first-search walk in the reschedule space. We implemented the alternative exact algorithm in C and conducted numerical experiments to demonstrate its promising performance.

This is a study of single and parallel machine scheduling problems with controllable processing time for each job. The processing time for job j depends on the position of the job in the schedule and is a function of the number of resource units allocated to its processing. Processing time functions and processing cost functions are allowed to be nonlinear. The scheduling problems considered here have important applications in industry and include many of the existing scheduling models as special cases. For the single machine problem, the objective is minimization of total compression costs plus a scheduling measure. The scheduling measures include makespan, total flow time, total differences in completion times, total differences in waiting times, and total earliness and tardiness with a common due date for all jobs. Except when the total earliness and tardiness measure is involved, each case the problem is solved efficiently. Under an assumption typically satisfied in just-in-time systems, the problem with total earliness and tardiness measure is also solved efficiently. Finally, for a large class of processing time functions; parallel machine problems with total flow time and total earliness and tardiness measures are solved efficiently. In each case we reduce the problem to a transportation problem.  相似文献

Operation-based flowtime estimation in a dynamic job shop   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the scheduling literature, estimation of job flowtimes has been an important issue since the late 1960s. The previous studies focus on the problem in the context of due date assignment and develop methods using aggregate information in the estimation process. In this study, we propose a new flowtime estimation method that utilizes the detailed job, shop and route information for operations of jobs as well as the machine imbalance information. This type of information is now available in computer-integrated manufacturing systems. The performance of the proposed method is measured by computer simulation under various experimental conditions. It is compared with the existing flowtime estimation methods for a wide variety of performance measures. The results indicate that the proposed method outperforms all the other flowtime estimation methods. Moreover, it is quite robust to changing shop conditions (i.e., machine breakdowns, arrival rate and processing time variations, etc.). A comprehensive bibliography is also provided in the paper.  相似文献

This article deals with the development of a heuristic for scheduling in a flowshop with the objective of minimizing the makespan and maximum tardiness of a job. The heuristic makes use of the simulated annealing technique. The proposed heuristic is relatively evaluated against the existing heuristic for scheduling to minimize the weighted sum of the makespan and maximum tardiness of a job. The results of the computational evaluation reveal that the proposed heuristic performs better than the existing one.  相似文献

Automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems provide the flexibility and integration required for flexible manufacturing systems. Previous AGV system studies have attempted to reduce the controlling complexities commonly encountered in these systems. However, this has not been accomplished without additional resources (e.g., automated guided vehicles) and lower system flexibility. The primary objective of this study is to compare the performance of AGV system configurations that reduce controlling and modification complexities (i.e., tandem configurations) to traditional AGV system configuration. Three AGV system configurations were tested under 16 experimental conditions. Performance metrics considered were AGV utilization, mean flowtime, mean tardiness, and percent tardy. The results of this study extend the findings of the previous studies in demonstrating the viability of tandem configurations, in that the tandem configurations match the performance of traditional configuration across all performance metrics, without sacrificing ease of control and system flexibility. Finally, the cost tradeoffs inherent in selecting a particular configuration are discussed.  相似文献

Priority dispatching rules and shop load affect job-shop performance. This paper evaluates ten different priority dispatching rules with respect to six different performance criteria under light, medium and heavy shop loads. Simulation was used as a tool to determine the rankings of the dispatching rules for a given shop load and performance criteria. A comparative study was conducted to investigate the performance of these rules. Two rules, ‘shortest processing time” and ‘least work remaining’, performed well under criteria related to the processing time. It was found that the rules that perform well in average and r.m.s. tardiness perform poorly under percentage-of-jobs-late criterion. The experimental results are conveyed with critical comments on the performance of the dispatching rules under different loading conditions of the shop.  相似文献

This paper considers the static single machine scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the maximum tardiness of any job subject to the constraint that the total number of lardy jobs is minimum. Based on simple dominance conditions an o(n2) heuristic algorithm is proposed to find an approximate solution to this problem. The effectiveness of the proposed heuristic algorithm is empirically evaluated by solving a large number of problems and comparing them to the optimal solutions obtained through the branch and bound algorithm.  相似文献

This paper addresses no-wait or no-idle flow shop scheduling problems with deteriorating jobs, i.e., jobs whose processing times are an increasing function of their starting time. A simple linear deterioration function is assumed and some dominating relationships between machines can be satisfied. It is shown that for the problems to minimize makespan or weighted sum of completion time, polynomial algorithms still exist, although these problems are more complicated than the classical ones. When the objective is to minimize maximum lateness or maximum tardiness, the solutions of a classical version may not hold.  相似文献

We consider the stochastic, single‐machine earliness/tardiness problem (SET), with the sequence of processing of the jobs and their due‐dates as decisions and the objective of minimizing the sum of the expected earliness and tardiness costs over all the jobs. In a recent paper, Baker ( 2014 ) shows the optimality of the Shortest‐Variance‐First (SVF) rule under the following two assumptions: (a) The processing duration of each job follows a normal distribution. (b) The earliness and tardiness cost parameters are the same for all the jobs. In this study, we consider problem SET under assumption (b). We generalize Baker's result by establishing the optimality of the SVF rule for more general distributions of the processing durations and a more general objective function. Specifically, we show that the SVF rule is optimal under the assumption of dilation ordering of the processing durations. Since convex ordering implies dilation ordering (under finite means), the SVF sequence is also optimal under convex ordering of the processing durations. We also study the effect of variability of the processing durations of the jobs on the optimal cost. An application of problem SET in surgical scheduling is discussed.  相似文献
