In this paper, a new sampling method is suggested, namely truncation-based ranked set samples (TBRSS) for estimating the population mean and median. The suggested method is compared with the simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), extreme ranked set sampling (ERSS) and median-ranked set sampling (MRSS) methods. It is shown that for estimating the population mean when the underlying distribution is symmetric, TBRSS estimator is unbiased and it is more efficient than the SRS estimator based on the same number of measured units. For asymmetric distributions considered in this study, TBRSS estimator is more efficient than the SRS for all considered distributions except for exponential distribution when the selection coefficient gets large. When compared with ERSS and MRSS methods, TBRSS performs well with respect to ERSS for all considered distributions except for U(0, 1) distribution, while TBRSS efficiency is higher than that of MRSS for U(0, 1) distribution. For estimating the population median, the TBRSS estimators have higher efficiencies when compared with SRS and ERSS. A real data set is used to illustrate the suggested method.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) is a cost-efficient technique for data collection when the units in a population can be easily judgment ranked by any cheap method other than actual measurements. Using auxiliary information in developing statistical procedures for inference about different population characteristics is a well-known approach. In this work, we deal with quantile estimation from a population with known mean when data are obtained according to RSS scheme. Through the simple device of mean-correction (subtract off the sample mean and add on the known population mean), a modified estimator is constructed from the standard quantile estimator. Asymptotic normality of the new estimator and its asymptotic efficiency relative to the original estimator are derived. Simulation results for several underlying distributions show that the proposed estimator is more efficient than the traditional one.  相似文献

The problem of improving upon the usual set estimator of a multivariate normal mean has only recently seen significant advances. Improved sets that take advantage of the Stein effect have been constructed. It is shown here that the Stein effect is so powerful that one can construct improved confidence sets that can have zero radius on a set of positive probability. Other, somewhat more sensible, sets which attain arbitrarily small radius are also constructed, and it is argued that one way to eliminate unreasonable confidence sets is through a conditional evaluation.  相似文献

In the case where the population distribution is unknown, the Kaplan–Meier estimator of the reliability function based on a ranked set sample with random right-censored data is first proposed. It is shown to be a unique self-consistent estimator. Then, the censored RSS estimator of the population mean is constructed. A simulation study is conducted to compare the performance of the proposed estimators with the corresponding estimators based on a simple random sample. It is shown that the ranked set sampling has higher efficiency. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a renal carcinoma study.  相似文献

A double L ranked set sampling (DLRSS) method is suggested for estimating the population mean. The DLRSS is compared with the simple random sampling (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS) and L ranked set sampling (LRSS) methods based on the same number of measured units. The conditions for which the suggested estimator performs better than the other estimators are derived. It is found that, the suggested DLRSS estimator is an unbiased of the population mean, and is more efficient than its counterparts using SRS, RSS, and LRSS methods. Real data sets are used for illustration.  相似文献

Qualitative robustness of the β-trimmed mean has already been observed in terms of relative efficiency and weak continuity of that estimator in neighbourhoods of the exponential distribution. Two more robustness considerations are given here in favour of the β-trimmed mean: the statistical functional representing this estimator is Fréchet differentiable; and it is a special case of the trimmed likelihood estimator. Further, simulations suggest that a fixed proportion of trimming is preferable to adaptive estimation in this case.  相似文献

A modified maximum likelihood estimator (MMLE) of scale parameter is considered under moving extremes ranked set sampling (MERSS), and its properties are obtained. For some usual scale distributions, we obtain explicit form of the MMLE and prove the MMLE is an unbiased estimator under MERSS. The simulation results show that the MMLE using MERSS is always more efficient than the MLE using simple random sampling, when the same sample size is used. The simulation results also show that the loss of efficiency in using the MMLE instead of the MLE is very small for small sample.  相似文献

Affiliation network is one kind of two-mode social network with two different sets of nodes (namely, a set of actors and a set of social events) and edges representing the affiliation of the actors with the social events. Although a number of statistical models are proposed to analyze affiliation networks, the asymptotic behaviors of the estimator are still unknown or have not been properly explored. In this article, we study an affiliation model with the degree sequence as the exclusively natural sufficient statistic in the exponential family distributions. We establish the uniform consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator when the numbers of actors and events both go to infinity. Simulation studies and a real data example demonstrate our theoretical results.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of unbiased estimation of the distribution function of an exponential population using order statistics based on a random sample. We present a (unique) unbiased estimator based on a single, say ith, order statistic and study some properties of the estimator for i = 2. We also indicate how this estimator can be utilized to obtain unbiased estimators when a few selected order statistics are available as well as when the sample is selected following an alternative sampling procedure known as ranked set sampling. It is further proved that for a ranked set sample of size two, the proposed estimator is uniformly better than the conventional nonparametric unbiased estimator, further, for a general sample size, a modified ranked set sampling procedure provides an unbiased estimator uniformly better than the conventional nonparametric unbiased estimator based on the usual ranked set sampling procedure.  相似文献

In this paper, the kernel density estimator for negatively superadditive dependent random variables is studied. The exponential inequalities and the exponential rate for the kernel estimator of density function with a uniform version, over compact sets are investigated. Also, the optimal bandwidth rate of the estimator is obtained using mean integrated squared error. The results are generalized and used to improve the ones obtained for the case of associated sequences. As an application, FGM sequences that fulfil our assumptions are investigated. Also, the convergence rate of the kernel density estimator is illustrated via a simulation study. Moreover, a real data analysis is presented.  相似文献

Density level sets are mainly estimated using one of three methodologies: plug-in, excess mass, or a hybrid approach. The plug-in methods are based on replacing the unknown density by some nonparametric estimator, usually the kernel one. Thus, the bandwidth selection is a fundamental problem from an applied perspective. Recently, specific selectors for level sets have been proposed. However, if some a priori information about the geometry of the level set is available, then excess mass algorithms can be useful. In this case, the problem of bandwidth selection can be avoided. The third methodology is a hybrid of the others. It assumes a mild geometric restriction on the level set and it requires a pilot nonparametric estimator of the density. One interesting open question concerns the performance of these methods. In this work, existing methods are reviewed, and two new hybrid algorithms are proposed. Their practical behaviour is compared through extensive simulation study.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of unbiased estimation of P[X > Y] = θ for two independent exponentially distributed random variables X and Y. We present (unique) unbiased estimator of θ based on a single pair of order statistics obtained from two independent random samples from the two populations. We also indicate how this estimator can be utilized to obtain unbiased estimators of θ when only a few selected order statistics are available from the two random samples as well as when the samples are selected by an alternative procedure known as ranked set sampling. It is proved that for ranked set samples of size two, the proposed estimator is uniformly better than the conventional non-parametric unbiased estimator and further, a modified ranked set sampling procedure provides an unbiased estimator even better than the proposed estimator.  相似文献

Kernel density estimation is probably the most widely used non parametric statistical method for estimating probability densities. In this paper, we investigate the performance of kernel density estimator based on stratified simple and ranked set sampling. Some asymptotic properties of kernel estimator are established under both sampling schemes. Simulation studies are designed to examine the performance of the proposed estimators under varying distributional assumptions. These findings are also illustrated with the help of a dataset on bilirubin levels in babies in a neonatal intensive care unit.  相似文献

This article considers nonparametric estimation of reliable life based on ranked set sampling and its properties. It is proven analytically that the large sample efficiency of the reliable life estimator under the balanced ranked set sampling is higher than that under the simple random sampling of the same size, but the relative efficiency damps away as the reliable life moves away from the median on both directions. To improve the efficiency for the estimation of extreme reliable life, we then propose a reliable life estimator under a modified ranked set sampling protocol, its strong consistency and asymptotic normality are established. The proposed sampling is shown to be superior to the balanced ranked set sampling, and the relative advantage improves as the reliable life moves away from median. Finally, results of simulation studies for small sample as well as an application to a real data set are presented to illustrate some of the theoretical findings.  相似文献

Abstract

Many researchers used auxiliary information together with survey variable to improve the efficiency of population parameters like mean, variance, total and proportion. Ratio and regression estimation are the most commonly used methods that utilized auxiliary information in different ways to get the maximum benefits in the form of high precision of the estimators. Thompson first introduced the concept of Adaptive cluster sampling, which is an appropriate technique for collecting the samples from rare and clustered populations. In this article, a generalized exponential type estimator is proposed and its properties have been studied for the estimation of rare and highly clustered population variance using single auxiliary information. A numerical study is carried out on a real and artificial population to judge the performance of the proposed estimator over the competing estimators. It is shown that the proposed generalized exponential type estimator is more efficient than the adaptive and non adaptive estimators under conventional sampling design.  相似文献

Affiliation network is one kind of two-mode social network with two different sets of nodes (namely, a set of actors and a set of social events) and edges representing the affiliation of the actors with the social events. The connections in many affiliation networks are only binary weighted between actors and social events that can not reveal the affiliation strength relationship. Although a number of statistical models are proposed to analyze affiliation binary weighted networks, the asymptotic behaviors of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) are still unknown or have not been properly explored in affiliation weighted networks. In this paper, we study an affiliation model with the degree sequence as the exclusively natural sufficient statistic in the exponential family distributions. We derive the consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum likelihood estimator in affiliation finite discrete weighted networks when the numbers of actors and events both go to infinity. Simulation studies and a real data example demonstrate our theoretical results.  相似文献

We propose an improved class of exponential ratio type estimators for coefficient of variation (CV) of a finite population in simple and stratified random sampling using two auxiliary variables under two-phase sampling scheme. We examine the properties of the proposed estimators based on first order of approximation. The proposed class of estimators is more efficient than the usual sample CV estimator, ratio estimator, exponential ratio estimator, usual difference estimator and modified difference type estimator. We also use real data sets for numerical comparisons.  相似文献

Summary. Many geophysical regression problems require the analysis of large (more than 104 values) data sets, and, because the data may represent mixtures of concurrent natural processes with widely varying statistical properties, contamination of both response and predictor variables is common. Existing bounded influence or high breakdown point estimators frequently lack the ability to eliminate extremely influential data and/or the computational efficiency to handle large data sets. A new bounded influence estimator is proposed that combines high asymptotic efficiency for normal data, high breakdown point behaviour with contaminated data and computational simplicity for large data sets. The algorithm combines a standard M -estimator to downweight data corresponding to extreme regression residuals and removal of overly influential predictor values (leverage points) on the basis of the statistics of the hat matrix diagonal elements. For this, the exact distribution of the hat matrix diagonal elements p ii for complex multivariate Gaussian predictor data is shown to be β ( p ii ,  m ,  N − m ), where N is the number of data and m is the number of parameters. Real geophysical data from an auroral zone magnetotelluric study which exhibit severe outlier and leverage point contamination are used to illustrate the estimator's performance. The examples also demonstrate the utility of looking at both the residual and the hat matrix distributions through quantile–quantile plots to diagnose robust regression problems.  相似文献

In this article, we present a corrected version of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the scale parameter with progressively Type-I censored data from a two-parameter exponential distribution. Furthermore, we propose a bias correction of both the location and scale MLE. The properties of the estimates are analyzed by a simulation study which also illustrates the effect of the correction. Moreover, the presented estimators are applied to two data sets. Finally, it is shown that the correction of the scale estimator is also necessary for other distributions with a finite left endpoint of support (e.g., three-parameter Weibull distributions).  相似文献
