The generalized Waring distribution is a discrete distribution with a wide spectrum of applications in areas such as accident statistics, income analysis, environmental statistics, etc. It has been used as a model that better describes such practical situations as opposed to the Poisson distribution or the negative binomial distribution. Associated to both the Poisson and negative binomial distributions are the well-known Poisson and Pólya processes. In this article, the generalized Waring process is defined. Two models have been shown to lead to the generalized Waring process. One is related to a Cox process, while the other is a compound Poisson process. The defined generalized Waring process is shown to be a stationary, but non homogenous Markov process. Several properties are studied and the intensity, individual intensity, and Chapman–Kolmogorov differential equations of it are obtained. Moreover, the Poisson and Pólya processes are shown to arise as special cases of the generalized Waring process. Using this fact, some known results and some properties of them are obtained.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose new classes of correlated Poisson processes and correlated weighted Poisson processes on the interval [0,1], which generalize the class of weighted Poisson processes defined by Balakrishnan and Kozubowski (2008), by incorporating a dependence structure between the standard uniform variables used in the construction. In this manner, we obtain another process that we refer to as correlated weighted Poisson process. Various properties of this process such as marginal and joint distributions, stationarity of the increments, moments, and the covariance function, are studied. The results are then illustrated through some examples, which include processes with length-biased Poisson, exponentially weighted Poisson, negative binomial, and COM-Poisson distributions.  相似文献

In certain applications involving discrete data, it is sometimes found that X = 0 is observed with a frequency significantly higher than predicted by the assumed model. Zero inflated Poisson, binomial and negative binomial models have been employed in some clinical trials and in some regression analysis problems.

In this paper, we study the zero inflated modified power series distributions (IMPSD) which include among others the generalized Poisson and the generalized negative binomial distributions and hence the Poisson, binomial and negative binomial distributions. The structural properties along with the distribution of the sum of independent IMPSD variables are studied. The maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the model is examined and the variance-covariance matrix of the estimators is obtained. Finally, examples are presented for the generalized Poisson distribution to illustrate the results.  相似文献

The article considers Bayesian analysis of hierarchical models for count, binomial and multinomial data using efficient MCMC sampling procedures. To this end, an improved method of auxiliary mixture sampling is proposed. In contrast to previously proposed samplers the method uses a bounded number of latent variables per observation, independent of the intensity of the underlying Poisson process in the case of count data, or of the number of experiments in the case of binomial and multinomial data. The bounded number of latent variables results in a more general error distribution, which is a negative log-Gamma distribution with arbitrary integer shape parameter. The required approximations of these distributions by Gaussian mixtures have been computed. Overall, the improvement leads to a substantial increase in efficiency of auxiliary mixture sampling for highly structured models. The method is illustrated for finite mixtures of generalized linear models and an epidemiological case study.  相似文献

Assuming that the random vectors X 1 and X 2 have independent bivariate Poisson distributions, the conditional distribution of X 1 given X 1?+?X 2?=?n is obtained. The conditional distribution turns out to be a finite mixture of distributions involving univariate binomial distributions and the mixing proportions are based on a bivariate Poisson (BVP) distribution. The result is used to establish two properties of a bivariate Poisson stochastic process which are the bivariate extensions of the properties for a Poisson process given by Karlin, S. and Taylor, H. M. (1975). A First Course in Stochastic Processes, Academic Press, New York.  相似文献

Traditional techniques for calculating control limits for processes with discrete responses are based on the Poisson distribution. However, for many processes, the assumption of a Poisson distribution is violated. In such cases, use of traditional Poisson control limits may result in an inflated risk of Type I error. The negative binomial distribution is a natural extension of the Poisson distribution and allows for over‐dispersion relative to the Poisson distribution. A simple approach to calculating exact and approximate control limits for count data based on the negative binomial distribution is described. The approach is illustrated by application to water bacteria count data taken from a water purification system. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper proposes a new model for autoregressive time series of counts in terms of a convolution of Poisson and negative binomial random variables, known as Poisson–negative binomial (PNB) distribution. The corresponding first-order integer valued time series models are developed and their properties are discussed. The geometric PNB and the geometric semi PNB distributions are also introduced and studied.  相似文献

This paper considers the first-order integer-valued autoregressive (INAR) process with Katz family innovations. This family of INAR processes includes a broad class of INAR(1) processes with Poisson, negative binomial, and binomial innovations, respectively, featuring equi-, over-, and under-dispersion. Its probabilistic properties such as ergodicity and stationarity are investigated and the formula of the marginal mean and variance is provided. Further, a statistical process control procedure based on the cumulative sum control chart is considered to monitor autocorrelated count processes. A simulation and real data analysis are conducted for illustration.  相似文献

Summary.  A useful discrete distribution (the Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution) is revived and its statistical and probabilistic properties are introduced and explored. This distribution is a two-parameter extension of the Poisson distribution that generalizes some well-known discrete distributions (Poisson, Bernoulli and geometric). It also leads to the generalization of distributions derived from these discrete distributions (i.e. the binomial and negative binomial distributions). We describe three methods for estimating the parameters of the Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution. The first is a fast simple weighted least squares method, which leads to estimates that are sufficiently accurate for practical purposes. The second method, using maximum likelihood, can be used to refine the initial estimates. This method requires iterations and is more computationally intensive. The third estimation method is Bayesian. Using the conjugate prior, the posterior density of the parameters of the Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution is easily computed. It is a flexible distribution that can account for overdispersion or underdispersion that is commonly encountered in count data. We also explore two sets of real world data demonstrating the flexibility and elegance of the Conway–Maxwell–Poisson distribution in fitting count data which do not seem to follow the Poisson distribution.  相似文献

Matrix-analytic Models and their Analysis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We survey phase-type distributions and Markovian point processes, aspects of how to use such models in applied probability calculations and how to fit them to observed data. A phase-type distribution is defined as the time to absorption in a finite continuous time Markov process with one absorbing state. This class of distributions is dense and contains many standard examples like all combinations of exponential in series/parallel. A Markovian point process is governed by a finite continuous time Markov process (typically ergodic), such that points are generated at a Poisson intensity depending on the underlying state and at transitions; a main special case is a Markov-modulated Poisson process. In both cases, the analytic formulas typically contain matrix-exponentials, and the matrix formalism carried over when the models are used in applied probability calculations as in problems in renewal theory, random walks and queueing. The statistical analysis is typically based upon the EM algorithm, viewing the whole sample path of the background Markov process as the latent variable.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce a surplus process involving a compound Poisson counting process, which is a generalization of the classical ruin model where the claim-counting process is a homogeneous Poisson process. The incentive is to model batch arrival of claims using a counting process that is based on a compound distribution. This reduces the difficulty of modeling claim amounts and is consistent with industrial data. Recursive formula, some properties and relevant main ruin theory results are provided. Further, we consider applications involving zero-truncated negative binomial and zero-truncated binomial batch arrivals when the claim amounts follow exponential or Erlang distribution.  相似文献

New Polya and inverse Polya distributions of order k are derived by means of generalized urn models and by compounding the binomial and negative binomial distributions of order k of Philippou (1986, 1983) with the beta distribution. It i s noted that the present Polpa distribution of order k includes as special cases a new hypergeometric distribution of order k, a negative one,an inverse one, and a discrete uniform of the same order. The probability generating functions, means and variances of the new distributions are obtained, and five asymptotic results are established relating them to the abovedmentioned binomial and negative binomial distributions of order k, and to the Poisson distribution of the same order of Philippou (1983).Moment estimates are also given and applications are indicated.  相似文献

This article is concerned with the Markov-Pólya distribution and its links with the Katz family of distributions. The Katz family is defined through a first-order recursion of remarkable form; it (only) covers the Poisson, negative binomial and binomial distributions. The Markov-Pólya distribution arises in the study of certain urn or population models that incorporate (anti)contagion effects. The present work is motivated by questions and applications in actuarial sciences. First, the Markov-Pólya distribution is presented as a claim frequency model. This distribution is then shown to satisfy a Katz-like recursion. As a consequence, a simple recursion is derived for computing a compound sum distribution that generalizes the Panjer algorithm in risk theory. The Katz family is also obtained as a limit of the Markov-Pólya distribution. Finally, an observed frequency of car accidents is fitted by a Markov-Pólya distribution.  相似文献

In this article, we compare the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) and negative binomial (NB) distributions based on three most important criteria: the probability of zero, the mean value, and the variance. Our results show that with same mean value and variance, the ZIP distribution always has a larger probability of zeros; with same mean value and probability of zeros, the NB distribution always has a larger variance; and with same variance and probability of zeros, the ZIP distribution always has a larger mean value. We also study the properties of Vuong test in model selection in three cases by simulations.  相似文献

Count data analysis techniques have been developed in biological and medical research areas. In particular, zero-inflated versions of parametric count distributions have been used to model excessive zeros that are often present in these assays. The most common count distributions for analyzing such data are Poisson and negative binomial. However, a Poisson distribution can only handle equidispersed data and a negative binomial distribution can only cope with overdispersion. However, a Conway–Maxwell–Poisson (CMP) distribution [4] can handle a wide range of dispersion. We show, with an illustrative data set on next-generation sequencing of maize hybrids, that both underdispersion and overdispersion can be present in genomic data. Furthermore, the maize data set consists of clustered observations and, therefore, we develop inference procedures for a zero-inflated CMP regression that incorporates a cluster-specific random effect term. Unlike the Gaussian models, the underlying likelihood is computationally challenging. We use a numerical approximation via a Gaussian quadrature to circumvent this issue. A test for checking zero-inflation has also been developed in our setting. Finite sample properties of our estimators and test have been investigated by extensive simulations. Finally, the statistical methodology has been applied to analyze the maize data mentioned before.  相似文献

We examine the properties of the distribution of the number of drug abusers in a previously free community assuming that initiators enter the community during a ‘latent’ period in which they randomly infect other members of the community, and that during the subsequent ‘control’ period the spread of abuse follows a linear birth and death process. The form of distribution is shown to be unaltered by a series of steady changes in the birth and death parameters. The distribution can be regarded as the convolution of three distributions:pseudo-binomial or binomial, negative binomial, and Polya-Aeppli. Special cases include the Laguerre series distribution.  相似文献

This paper discusses four alternative methods of forming bivariate distributions with compound Poisson marginals. Basic properties of each bivariate version are given. A new bivariate negative binomial distribution, and four bivariate versions of the Sichel distribution, are defined and their properties given.

We consider the approximation of mixed Poisson distributions by Poisson laws and also by related finite signed measures of higher order. Upper bounds and asymptotic relations are given for several distances. Even in the case of the Poisson approximation with respect to the total variation distance, our bounds have better order than those given in the literature. In particular, our results hold under weaker moment conditions for the mixing random variable. As an example, we consider the approximation of the negative binomial distribution, which enables us to prove the sharpness of a constant in the upper bound of the total variation distance. The main tool is an integral formula for the difference of the counting densities of a Poisson distribution and a related finite signed measure.  相似文献

Negative binomial and Poisson distributions are fitted to data on scores in Association Football for the seasons 1946–47 to 1983–84. There are strong grounds for preferring the negative binomial up to 1970; thereafter the Poisson seems adequate. Simplification is achieved by fitting the negative binomial with a common parameter. The analyses are set in the context of previous applications and interpretations in the area. Different models giving rise to the negative binomial or Poisson are investigated and some support found for models not previously advanced in this context. Notwith-standing the success of such exercises some scepticism is expressed about the interpretations placed on previous analyses.  相似文献
