The Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) distribution is a positively skewed distribution, frequently used for analysing lifetime data. In this paper, we propose a simple method of estimation for the parameters of the two-parameter BS distribution by making use of some key properties of the distribution. Compared with the maximum likelihood estimators and the modified moment estimators, the proposed method has smaller bias, but having the same mean square errors as these two estimators. We also discuss some methods of construction of confidence intervals. The performance of the estimators is then assessed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, an example is used to illustrate the method of estimation developed here.  相似文献

A general method for determining Pitman Nearness is given In the case of univariate estimators. This method is then applied to some estimation problems. The concept of Pitman Nearness is also generalized to the multivariate case. The James-Stein estimators are used to illustrate the multivariate comparison.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of estimation of the fundamental frequency of a periodic function, which has several applications in Speech Signal Processing. The problem was originally proposed by Hannan (1974) and later on Quinn and Thomson (1991) provided an estimation procedure of the unknown parameters. It is observed that the estimation procedure of Quinn and Thomson (1991) is quite involved numerically. In this paper we propose to use two simple estimators and it is observed that their performance are quite satisfactory. Asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are obtained. The large sample properties of the estimators are compared theoretically. We present some simulation results to compare their small sample performance. One speech data is analyzed using this particular model.  相似文献

For the three-parameter gamma distribution, it is known that the method of moments as well as the maximum likelihood method have difficulties such as non-existence in some range of the parameters, convergence problems, and large variability. For this reason, in this article, we propose a method of estimation based on a transformation involving order statistics from the sample. In this method, the estimates always exist uniquely over the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. The bias and mean squared error of the estimators are also examined by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study, and the empirical results show the small-sample superiority in addition to the desirable large sample properties.  相似文献

Chirp signals are quite common in many natural and man-made systems such as audio signals, sonar, and radar. Estimation of the unknown parameters of a signal is a fundamental problem in statistical signal processing. Recently, Kundu and Nandi [Parameter estimation of chirp signals in presence of stationary noise. Stat Sin. 2008;75:187–201] studied the asymptotic properties of least squares estimators (LSEs) of the unknown parameters of a simple chirp signal model under the assumption of stationary noise. In this paper, we propose periodogram-type estimators called the approximate least squares estimators (ALSEs) to estimate the unknown parameters and study the asymptotic properties of these estimators under the same error assumptions. It is observed that the ALSEs are strongly consistent and asymptotically equivalent to the LSEs. Similar to the periodogram estimators, these estimators can also be used as initial guesses to find the LSEs of the unknown parameters. We perform some numerical simulations to see the performance of the proposed estimators and compare them with the LSEs and the estimators proposed by Lahiri et al. [Efficient algorithm for estimating the parameters of two dimensional chirp signal. Sankhya B. 2013;75(1):65–89]. We have analysed two real data sets for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss some aspects of the distribution theory associated with the centered bivariate normal conditionals distribution including discussion of its marginal distributions. We calculate the maximum likelihood and pseudolikelihood estimators. We propose a simplified moment based method of estimation. Finally, we discuss generalizations to higher dimensions.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of estimation of the length distribution of marine populations in the Gaussian-multinomial model is considered. For the purpose of the mean and covariance parameter estimation, the method of moments estimators are developed. That is, minimum variance linear unbiased estimator for the mean frequency vector is derived and a consistent estimator for the covariance matrix of the length observations is presented. The usefulness of the proposed estimators is illustrated with an analysis of real cod length measurement data.  相似文献

Nonparametric estimation of the time varying parameter of a semimartingal e model is considered. Stochastic version of the delta method is given. Variance process o"f the estimators and the functionals of the estimators are studied in detail. As an application, a new estimate "for the variance of the product limit estimator is proposed.  相似文献

Brief Abstract

This article focuses on estimation of multivariate simple linear profiles. While outliers may hamper the expected performance of the ordinary regression estimators, this study resorts to robust estimators as the remedy of the estimation problem in presence of contaminated observations. More specifically, three robust estimators M, S and MM are employed. Extensive simulation runs show that in the absence of outliers or for small amount of contamination, the robust methods perform as well as the classical least square method, while for medium and large amounts of contamination the proposed estimators perform considerably better than classical method.  相似文献

In this paper, a general class of estimators for the estimation of a finite population total in multi-character surveys is proposed. It is shown that the estimators proposed by Arnab (2002), Amahiaet al. (1989) and Bansal and Singh (1985) are the special cases of the proposed class of estimators. The proposed class of estimators is always more efficient than the estimator proposed by Rao (1966).  相似文献

Estimates of population characteristics such as domain means are often expected to follow monotonicity assumptions. Recently, a method to adaptively pool neighbouring domains was proposed, which ensures that the resulting domain mean estimates follow monotone constraints. The method leads to asymptotically valid estimation and inference, and can lead to substantial improvements in efficiency, in comparison with unconstrained domain estimators. However, assuming incorrect shape constraints may lead to biased estimators. Here, we develop the Cone Information Criterion for Survey Data as a diagnostic method to measure monotonicity departures on population domain means. We show that the criterion leads to a consistent methodology that makes an asymptotically correct decision choosing between unconstrained and constrained domain mean estimators. Considering exponential families of distributions, we estimate parameters which are not the natural parameters. We prove that the admissible estimators of these parameters are limits of Bayes estimators and can be expressed through a given functional form. An important particular case of this model pertains to the estimation of the mean of a multidimensional normal distribution when the variance is known up to a multiplicative factor. We deduce from the main result a necessry condition for the admissibility of matricial shrinkage estimators.  相似文献

When data on an auxiliary variate is available on all the units of the population, negatively correlated with the study variate, Robson (1957) and Murthy (1964) proposed product method of estimation for the estimation of the population total (mean) of the study variate. In this paper, we discuss a method given in Rao (1983) and obtain a simpler dervation of the class of unbiased product estimators for the case of Simple Random Sampling WithOut Replacement design as well as for the case of interpenetrating subsamples design which follows as a limiting case. Finally, we shall illustrate the results by means of two simple numerical example from live data.  相似文献

This paper deals with estimation of parameters and the mean life of a mixed failure time distribution that has a discrete probability mass at zero and an exponential distribution with mean O for positive values. A new sampling scheme similar to Jayade and Prasad (1990) is proposed for estimation of parameters. We derive expressions for biases and mean square errors (MSEs) of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs). We also obtain the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators (UMVUEs) of the parameters. We compare the estimator of O and mean life fj based on the proposed sampling scheme with the estimators obtained by using the sampling scheme of Jayade and Prasad (1990).  相似文献

In one-way ANOVA, most of the pairwise multiple comparison procedures depend on normality assumption of errors. In practice, errors have non-normal distributions so frequently. Therefore, it is very important to develop robust estimators of location and the associated variance under non-normality. In this paper, we consider the estimation of one-way ANOVA model parameters to make pairwise multiple comparisons under short-tailed symmetric (STS) distribution. The classical least squares method is neither efficient nor robust and maximum likelihood estimation technique is problematic in this situation. Modified maximum likelihood (MML) estimation technique gives the opportunity to estimate model parameters in closed forms under non-normal distributions. Hence, the use of MML estimators in the test statistic is proposed for pairwise multiple comparisons under STS distribution. The efficiency and power comparisons of the test statistic based on sample mean, trimmed mean, wave and MML estimators are given and the robustness of the test obtained using these estimators under plausible alternatives and inlier model are examined. It is demonstrated that the test statistic based on MML estimators is efficient and robust and the corresponding test is more powerful and having smallest Type I error.  相似文献

Simultaneous estimation of the vector of the variance components for mixed and random models under the quadratic loss function is considered. For a large class of such models there are identified classes of admissible biased invariant quadratic estimators that are better than some admissible unbiased estimators. Numerous numerical results presented in the paper show that for many of the commonly used balanced models the improvements in the quadratic risk may be considerable over a large set of the parameter space.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the problem of best linear unbiased estimation and best linear invariant estimation of the common scale parameter of several symmetric distributions using some functions of spacings of all observations taken from individual samples. We also proved a sufficient condition for the non negativity of the common scale estimator obtained by the above method. Furthermore, we obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for the derived estimators to be constant multiple of the sum of first and last spacings of the pooled sample.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the variable selection and estimation for high-dimensional generalized linear models when the number of parameters diverges with the sample size. We propose a penalized quasi-likelihood function with the bridge penalty. The consistency and the Oracle property of the quasi-likelihood bridge estimators are obtained. Some simulations and a real data analysis are given to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the location and scale parameters of an extreme value distribution based on multiply Type-II censored samples. We first describe the best linear unbiased estimators and the maximum likelihood estimators of these parameters. After observing that the best linear unbiased estimators need the construction of some tables for its coefficients and that the maximum likelihood estimators do not exist in an explicit algebraic form and hence need to be found by numerical methods, we develop approximate maximum likelihood estimators by appropriately approximating the likelihood equations. In addition to being simple explicit estimators, these estimators turn out to be nearly as efficient as the best linear unbiased estimators and the maximum likelihood estimators. Next, we derive the asymptotic variances and covariance of these estimators in terms of the first two single moments and the product moments of order statistics from the standard extreme value distribution. Finally, we present an example in order to illustrate all the methods of estimation of parameters discussed in this paper.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce strategies how the ordinary least square estimator of the coefficient vector of the multiple regression could be shrunk. One of the strategies shrinks all components while the other shrinks only some components. We show that the proposed shrunken estimators are admissibile. We also provide theoretical results on risk comparisons.  相似文献
