Middle School Children's Perceptions on Welfare and Poverty: An Exploratory, Qualitative Study

This study was undertaken to determine how middle school children assess the effects of welfare reform on their daily lives. The study consisted of thirty interviews with children and their mothers recruited from a middle school in a large, metropolitan area. From the children's perspective, multiple jobs and evening/night hours interfered with the child-parent relationship. Other consequences included grades going down and not getting to school on time. All the children stated that mothers should work, but most children felt mothers should only work when their children are in school. Welfare and poverty were issues about which children were teased at school.     

Influences on registered nurses' decision‐making in cases of suspected child abuse

This paper reports on the factors influencing decision‐making for a group of 10 South Australian community nurses in cases of suspected child abuse. Each nurse participated in a structured interview. The data were organized into themes, using the computer program NUD*IST. Factors having an impact on the nurses' decisions to report included: the type of suspected abuse, making moral judgements and decision‐making, the consequences of reporting, and the impact versus the outcomes of reporting. Most significantly, the community nurses based many of their decisions on their estimation of the kind of intervention likely to be undertaken by children's protection services. Open Road or Blind Alley? Welfare Reform, Mothers, and Children with Disabilities

Welfare reform was examined for 39 Michigan families whose children have significant health or intellectual and behavioral disabilities. As a group, these families received little specialized assistance or services to address their unique needs. Family-cited barriers to self-sufficiency included poorly trained welfare caseworkers, limited public transportation, and inadequate child care. Having an older child was the only discriminating variable between working and non-working mothers. However, working mothers only had temporary positions with no benefits and low pay. All families, whether employed or not, lived below the poverty line.     

A review of the epidentiological research on child sexual abuse. Community and college student samples

This article is the first of two consecutive reviews on the major empirical studies which have been carried out in an attempt to estimate the prevalence of child sexual abuse among females. The research is structured in terms of three sample categories: (a) probability and non-probability samples of the general population; (b) college student samples; and (c) clinical inpatient and outpatient samples. This part of the review deals with (a) and (b) and highlights a number of unresolved methodological issues which may contribute to the variance in reported prevalence rates. These include a myriad of definitions of child sexual abuse and different methods of eliciting information on possible histories of abuse. Despite these problems. taken as a whole the prevalence studies indicate the significant numbers of people who have experienced abuse and who are willing to disclose aspects of these abusive experiences.

促性腺激素、V_(D_3)、V_E亚硒酸钠对母兔繁殖力的影响

选择成年、健康、未孕母兔 32只 ,随机分成 8组 ,分别给予促性腺激素 (Ⅰ组 )、VD3(Ⅱ组 )、VE 亚硒酸钠 (Ⅲ组 ) ,促性腺激素 +VD3(Ⅳ组 )、VD3+VE 亚硒酸钠 (Ⅴ组 )、促性腺激素 +VE 亚硒酸钠(Ⅵ组 )、促性腺激 +VD3+VE 亚硒酸钠 (Ⅶ组 ) ,空白对照 8种处理。试验结果表明 ,母兔经药物处理后 ,其繁殖性能 (发情状况、排卵数、正常受精卵数 )都比对照组显著地提高 ,但Ⅰ、Ⅳ、Ⅵ组有畸形卵子存在 ,以处理Ⅶ组效果最好 ,其排卵数达 4 7± 2 0 .3个 ,正常受精卵 35个 ,分别比对照组多 36 .5个、30个。
