Reminiscence Group for Chinese Older People-A Cultural Consideration

Abstract

Literature abounds with discussions on the therapeutic effects of reminiscence groups for older people. To ensure their effectiveness in Chinese societies, helping professionals should take into account the specific cultural values and experiences of older Chinese people. This paper draws on the experiences of social work students in Hong Kong and offers suggestions in five areas in the design and implementation of a reminiscence group in order to make the therapy culturally sensitive: membership, group content, the interaction process, identifying and appreciating the positives and the leadership style of the helping professionals.

移情：文化交流的一种审美路径——从罗蒂新实用主义的视角分析

当今世界的文化多元的现实使我们一方面要避免囿于一己文化的框架而突出独立冲突,另一方面又要在防止文化霸权和殖民的情况下尽可能地实现文化间的平等沟通交流。面对复杂的形势,新实用主义代表人物罗蒂关于移情的论述给我们提示了一种新的文化交流机制。移情发生作用的心理机制以及它与道德的紧密关联不仅能帮助人们处理个体之间的关系,而且能够帮助人们从个体走向群体的团结。罗蒂认为文学作品及审美移情对此贡献良多。个体之上的审美移情及其作用同样适用于文化自身的发展及之间的交流,尽管具有一定的乌托邦色彩,但不失为一种极有理论和实践价值的选择。

Cultural Identity and Place in Adult Korean-American Intercountry Adoptees

ABSTRACT

This study explores the interrelationship between cultural identity and place in the lives of adult Korean adoptees living primarily in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Using life histories derived through multiple semi-structured interviews, a web of related themes emerged which reveal the interplay between ethnicity, identity, gender, and place. From childhood to adulthood, most Korean adoptees followed a similar developmental trajectory of denial, self-awareness, and emerging cultural consciousness about their Korean heritage, particularly upon their departure from their adoptive homes after high school. These journeys were mediated and nuanced by environmental factors including -but not limited to -places adoptees lived or visited in Korea, the U.S. or elsewhere abroad. This study highlights the limitations of previous studies that focused only on adoptive parents or adoptees as children, an approach which loses the life course perspective of inter-country adoptees' search for identity, belonging, and a sense of home.     

Culturally Competent Social Work Practice with Veterans: An Overview of the U.S. Military

Despite social work's longstanding history of serving veterans, few resources support culturally competent practice with this population. If social workers are to serve veterans effectively and efficiently, a basic understanding of the U.S. military is essential. This article presents a basic overview of U.S. military including its structure and history, the propensity to enlist in the armed forces, culture, and training methods and objectives. With an understanding of these aspects of military service and continued effort to learn about their client's military experience, social workers will be prepared to provide culturally competent services consistent with the profession's values and ethics.     

文化创意产业就业影响因素及其效应

从技术水平、资本投入、产业结构、城市化进程四个因素出发，利用相关数据构建线性模型．对决定文化创意产业就业的因素进行数量分析。结果显示：投资水平、产业结构转变、城市化水平对文化创意产业的就业影响起着积极影响。从各因素的影响系数来看，城市化水平影响程度最大，而目前我国文化创意产业的技术水平还未对文化创意产业产生就业挤出效应，这说明了目前我国文化创意产业的技术可能仍以资本节约型技术为主。
