Comparison of proportions with asymmetric prior information

In this paper a Bayesian model is developed for comparing two binomial proportions. A two stage hierarchical prior distribution is used to represent prior dependence. Prior exchangeability and independence are shown to be but special cases. The relevant distributions have to be computed numerically and some examples are presented.

为加强中等职业学校教师队伍建设,提高教师队伍整体素质,＂十一五＂期间,教育部、财政部实施了中等职业学校教师素质提高计划,专业骨干教师国家级培训是该计划的重要内容和主干项目。河北科技师范学院积极探索培训模式与方法,实施了＂能力本位＂的教学方法,形成了＂三位一体＂的培训模式,建立了＂标准化＂的培训体系。     

Preparing to work: dramaturgy,cynicism and normative ‘remote’ control in the socialization of graduate recruits in management consulting

This paper examines the socialization of graduate recruits into a knowledge intensive labour process and organizational culture. Theoretically the paper draws upon the idea of ‘preparing for work’ to position this early socialization as a crucial moment in the production of subjectivities suited (and booted) for the labour process of management consulting. Empirically the paper reports on a two‐day induction session for new graduate recruits joining a global management consultancy and their responses to this training. Particular attention is given to the use of role‐play and a dramaturgical workshop used in part of the training process. The paper argues that the utilization of dramaturgy in training is consistent with the overall approach to control developed in the firm in response to the fact that the labour process of consulting is often conducted on client sites, away from any direct supervisory gaze. As such, the consultants were subjected to a form of cultural control that was designed to function independently of direct supervision. This control did not operate directly upon the new employees professed values, however, but at one step removed so that a ‘cynical distance’ from the content of the organization’s culture was accepted so long as a professional ‘ethic of behaviour’ was established. By focusing on an ‘ethic of behaviour’ these young professionals were encouraged to internalize a self‐control akin to that of an actor, rather than internalizing the corporate values entirely.     

Nonparametric bootstrapping for hierarchical data

Nonparametric bootstrapping for hierarchical data is relatively underdeveloped and not straightforward: certainly it does not make sense to use simple nonparametric resampling, which treats all observations as independent. We have provided some resampling strategies of hierarchical data, proved that the strategy of nonparametric bootstrapping on the highest level (randomly sampling all other levels without replacement within the highest level selected by randomly sampling the highest levels with replacement) is better than that on lower levels, analyzed real data and performed simulation studies.

作为培养专业人才的重要阵地，高校的人才培养应服务国家和地方发展战略，面向经济社会发展需要，这也是高校内涵式发展的核心路径。文章立足重庆，分析了重庆市高校人才培养情况，重庆市产业发展，尤其是智能化引领下的产业发展的现状及趋势。同时，针对重庆市高校人才培养与产业发展对接存在的诸多问题，从制定对接规划，完善协调推进机制、政策保障机制和监督奖惩机制等多方面提出了对策建议，以期改善现状，更好地为重庆市产业升级转型服务。     

A Flexible Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling Technique for Risk Analysis of Major Accidents

Safety analysis of rare events with potentially catastrophic consequences is challenged by data scarcity and uncertainty. Traditional causation‐based approaches, such as fault tree and event tree (used to model rare event), suffer from a number of weaknesses. These include the static structure of the event causation, lack of event occurrence data, and need for reliable prior information. In this study, a new hierarchical Bayesian modeling based technique is proposed to overcome these drawbacks. The proposed technique can be used as a flexible technique for risk analysis of major accidents. It enables both forward and backward analysis in quantitative reasoning and the treatment of interdependence among the model parameters. Source‐to‐source variability in data sources is also taken into account through a robust probabilistic safety analysis. The applicability of the proposed technique has been demonstrated through a case study in marine and offshore industry.     

Dealing with Conflict in Local Planning: Reflections from Australian Planners

Planners routinely deal with issues involving conflict, regularly engaging with people who may be upset, angry and at times aggressive. Yet planners are not conflict resolution specialists and their role is not necessarily to act as mediator. The level of conflict they experience can be stressful and challenging. This paper reports on interviews conducted with local government planners in Melbourne, Australia, in which they discuss their experience with conflicts and reflect on their preparation for this challenging aspect of their profession. The results indicate the need for more emphasis on training in a range of personal and professional behaviours within planning education.
