Non‐accidental injury and bone fragility disorders: the need for a multidisciplinary perspective

A case is presented of a child who was initially diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta following a skull fracture. However, she later presented with multiple fractures and soft tissue injuries which were considered to be due to non‐accidental injury. It can be perplexing distinguishing accidental and non‐accidental injury in children where a bone fragility disorder has been suspected. A combination of a careful review of the history, a thorough examination and expert review of the radiology is imperative. DNA testing can be helpful. Multidisciplinary case review, taking into account the social history and any concerns professionals have about the family, is invaluable in informing a difficult diagnosis. In this context, there is a definite role for other agencies in challenging the diagnosis or exclusion of non‐accidental injury. Professionals should be willing to challenge the exclusion of non‐accidental injury when such exclusion is not evidence based. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

《说文解字》“女”部字的构建和内涵折射出古代先民的审美情趣、道德传统和文化观念等社会信息。通过对出现在经典文献和字书中的“女”部字进行研究和考证，认为女性在古代社会是一个特殊的、非主导地位的和非正统的非主流群体。具体表现在古代女性的名字称谓具有特殊性，表示女性构件的“女”部与表示男性的构字部件具有不平衡性和非对称性，古代女性相对于男性而言有极其苛刻严格的审美标准等文化现象。     

Novel Funding Paradigm for Social Work Services in China: Reflections on the Guangzhou Experience

Three decades of Chinese economic modernization created wonders that transform the living of the population. Yet economic affluence also spawns juggernauts of new social ills, and mounting social tensions emerge from widening inequalities between the wealthy and the less privileged. Local governments are under intense pressure to identify new approaches to addressing new social problems such as rising unemployment, elderly neglect, and juvenile delinquency through social management. This article recapitulates some of the experience of non‐governmental organizations through collaborating with the authorities, in pioneering social work services using new mode of public funding mechanism.     

ROC Curves in Non‐Parametric Location‐Scale Regression Models

Abstract. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is a tool of extensive use to analyse the discrimination capability of a diagnostic variable in medical studies. In certain situations, the presence of a covariate related to the diagnostic variable can increase the discriminating power of the ROC curve. In this article, we model the effect of the covariate over the diagnostic variable by means of non‐parametric location‐scale regression models. We propose a new non‐parametric estimator of the conditional ROC curve and study its asymptotic properties. We also present some simulations and an illustration to a data set concerning diagnosis of diabetes.     

Bayesian variable selection with spherically symmetric priors

We propose that Bayesian variable selection for linear parametrizations with Gaussian iid likelihoods should be based on the spherical symmetry of the diagonalized parameter space. Our r-prior results in closed forms for the evidence for four examples, including the hyper-g prior and the Zellner–Siow prior, which are shown to be special cases. Scenarios of a single-variable dispersion parameter and of fixed dispersion are studied, and asymptotic forms comparable to the traditional information criteria are derived. A simulation exercise shows that model comparison based on our r-prior gives good results comparable to or better than current model comparison schemes.     

Practices and Flows of Digital Photography: An Ethnographic Framework

This article develops a methodological framework for undertaking empirical studies of practices and flows, of doings and circulations, of digital tourist photography. The article outlines what might be termed a non‐representational approach to photography concerned with affordances, actor‐networks, hybridized practices and networked flows of photographs. The article falls in three parts. It begins with rethinking photography theory. Traditional dualisms between affordance and practice are challenged, and photography is conceptualized as a hybridized, embodied performance. How digital photography changes photography's traditional affordances is then discussed. The third part discusses various methods to describe how affordances of digital tourist photography are used, twisted and resisted in concrete hybridized practices. I suggest undertaking multi‐sided ethnographies with ‘busy photographers’ to craft non‐representational accounts of mobile practices of photographing and flows of photographic images across various sites and actor‐networks. In a broader sense, this article is a methodological contribution to ‘the new mobilities paradigm’.     

债信文化的形成与中国金融业的发展

债信文化是市场经济制度的基本文化形态,从一定意义上讲,由计划体制向市场体制转轨,就是要建立全社会的信用基础以及与之相适应的债信文化和契约文化.针对中国缺乏而又急需债信文化的现实,开放民间金融和民间信用,已成为建立和发展债信文化的必由之路.而放弃政府对国有企业、特别是国有银行的隐含担保,清除债信文化的形成障碍,已成为建立和发展债信文化的当务之急.     

形而上与形而下:后形而上学的解读--王船山的道器之辨及其哲学意蕴

作为中国古代哲学的总结者,王船山对于形而上与形而下之间的区分作出了不同于宋明儒家的理解.他的理解主要从两个前提出发:第一,之谓与谓之之辨,通过这两个语词的区分,王船山明确了形而上与形而下的区分不是世界固有区域的客观划分,而是根据主体的存在方式才作出的主观性划分;第二,有无与隐显之辨,通过这个讨论,王船山告诉我们,形而上与形而下之别是隐显之别,而不是有无之辨.王船山对形上、形下的如上解读意味着把哲学之思从形而上学框架内解放出来的努力,意味着后形而上学视域的开启.
