Ethics in Operations Research and Management Sciences: A never-ending effort to combine rigor and passion

From practice to theory, we introduce a state-of-the-art stream of papers that promotes an inclusive and complementary consideration of both analytical methods and ethical values in Operations Research and Management Sciences (OR/MS). We suggest a perspective according to which the consideration of ethics in OR/MS constitutes an enrichment of our discipline as well as a contribution to a more sustainable future in general.     

生物医学导论课程设置与教学实践

面对我国对医学相关专业人才的迫切需要,以及医学院校与之相应的培养规模急剧增加,学校如何保证和提高教育教学质量和人才培养的质量,是迫切需要解决的问题。由于医学相关专业的专业特色明确,因此也就需要与之相适应的课程体系。文章对南京医科大学六年来在医学相关专业中整合交叉学科,开设生物医学导论课程的教学实践进行总结,以此对医学相关专业人才的培养提供建议和指导。     

从师道尊严到以人为本——试论如何建立良好的师生关系

尊师重道是中华民族的优良传统,师道尊严深刻体现了教师地位的崇高和威严.然而,现代教育如果一味强调师道尊严,而忽视学生的需要、人格和尊严,那么,这种"师道"与"生道"的不平等就会使师生关系变得紧张,教学效果也会受到影响.而以人为本的教育现,则视师生间为相互平等的关系.只有在平等基础上的相互尊重、理解、信任和关爱,才能建立良好的师生关系,也才能提高教学实效性.     

职业自我概念发展与大学生职业生涯规划——理论及来自高校的实践分析

大学生的职业自我概念发展实质是大学生个人职业自我概念在从职业生涯规划到职业社会的适应中不断分化和综合的过程。针对当前高校大学生职业生涯规划存在规划意识薄弱,投机心理,期望值过高缺乏创业意识以及能力不足等现状,以职业自我概念发展理论为指导,提出职业生涯规划教育全程化,教育辅导专业化、规模化以及系统信息化等促进大学生职业生涯规划,达到自我发展的相关对策建议。     

Research as Profession and Practice: Frameworks for Guiding the Responsible Conduct of Research

Programs in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) vary between institutions, demonstrated by disparate structures and goals. These variations may be attributed to the absence of grounding frameworks within which to examine research and RCR education programs. This article examines research as a practice and a profession, using these frames to draw out defining features of research and the moral obligations entailed. Situating research within virtue ethics can clarify how researchers might cultivate the virtues necessary for meeting its obligations and aims. By elucidating these features, these perspectives can serve to guide the development of RCR education programs.     

Is Social Work Really Being Recognized? Problems with Social Work Employment Opportunities in Mainland China

Since social work education was reintroduced in Chinese universities in the 1980s, there are 303 bachelor of social work programs and 62 master of social work programs. Yet, the development of social work positions has lagged behind. This study aimed to study the current development of social work employment opportunities in Mainland China through an empirical lens. Data on social work positions were collected from three employment websites over a 30-day period. Data on 248 social work job postings were analyzed using content analysis and ArcGIS spatial distribution analysis. We identified three problems in the current development of social work profession in China: inconsistency between government policy, social work education, and available jobs; geographic disparities of the distribution of social work jobs; and mismatch between social work education and social work employment opportunities. We provided implications to address each problem.     

The discursive structure of the social-technical divide: the example of information systems development1

The social and technical are commonly defined in opposition to each other. Yet technology practitioners are often quite comfortable with the idea that the technical is constitutively social. Drawing on an ethnographic study of a computerised information systems development project, this paper examines various usages of notions of ‘technical’. Attempts to situate the study at the ‘technical core’ of the project were met with a series of rebuffs. ‘Technical’ talk is to be understood as a categorising device which does boundary work. Technical talk invokes and performs a disjunction between networks of social relationships and stipulates a moral order with associated norms for acceptance and transition. The difficulty of penetrating the intelligibility of technical talk is understandable as a struggle in familiarising oneself with the routine social actions of a separate community. In addition, the private sphere of the technical is often distanced in time. The costs involved in journeying into the future are analogous to those of penetrating alien cultures. Ideas of progress and advance are often associated with the invocation of ‘the technical’. These connote a notion of timing which reinforces the distance and difference of—and hence depicts the costs involved in penetrating—removed sets of social relationships.     

Public perceptions of social workers and social work in the Republic of Croatia

Throughout the war and the post-war period, the field of social work in Croatia has developed at an accelerated rate. The involvement and assistance from international agencies and individuals created numerous fora for exchange, collaboration and mutual learning among all the helping professions. The research process represented a collaborative effort of faculty, lecturers and students in the Study Center for Social Work in the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Law. The sample was convenient, composed mainly of the urban population of Croatia. The instrument consists of two main parts, one regarding the content of a social worker's work, and the other regarding the attitudes toward that profession. We believe that the results of our study demonstrate that social work, as a profession, is relatively well known among the citizens of Croatia. Those markers pertaining to the attitude towards social work profession, which are negative in nature, are ranked by our participants as lowest in importance on the scale.
