Attitudes of Managers Who Are More or Less Career Plateaued

This study investigated demographic and attitudinal differences across managers classified as nonplateaued, content plateaued, hierarchically plateaued, or both content and hierarchically plateaued. The results revealed significant demographic differences across the 4 groups on a variety of variables. Managers who were classified as both hierarchically and job content plateaued tended to report less favorable job attitudes than managers who were plateaued for one reason only or managers who were nonplateaued. Managers who were only job content plateaued tended to report less favorable job attitudes than managers who were only hierarchically plateaued.     

Deconstructing National Myths,Reconstituting Morality: Modernity,Hegemony and the Israeli National Past1

Abstract Since the late 1980s there has been a growing scholarly concern with speaking silences of the past and recognizing the voices and perspectives of those “others” who have been written out of hegemonic historical narratives, especially in areas of intense conflict like Israel/Palestine. This study is concerned with the ways in which hegemonic national history can be re‐inscribed even as attempts are made to tell an alternative narrative. This article is based on three years of ethnographic research in an Israeli Jewish high school at the height of debates among historians about the Israeli national past. It examines the motivation to teach an alternative narrative that would recognize Palestinian perspectives and reveals the micro‐processes involved that ultimately undermine such recognition.     

Reactions to Sex on Television: An Exploratory Study

A sample of 660 adults watched one of 15 randomly selected half-houror hour programs which were representative of prime-time majornetwork offerings in the fall 1977 season and which had beenobjectively analyzed for the presence of physically intimateand sexual content. The adults were asked to rate the amountof sexual content in the program and the suitability of thatcontent for adult, teenage, and child audiences and to estimatehow often specific physically intimate behaviors were presentin the show. Each adult provided demographic data, completedan attitude survey on TV sex, and evaluated how suitably 13sexual topics have been portrayed on TV. Through correlationalanalyses, the study provides information about what kinds ofpeople are responding in which ways to specific kinds of physicallyintimate portrayals on television.

A Clash in Perspective? A Study of Worker and Client Perceptions of Social Work

Summary This study explores in a small sample of a worker's own clientswhether clashes in perspective occur between clients and socialworker, and how this is linked with satisfaction and dissatisfaction.Dissatisfied clients did not share a framework with the worker,but felt blamed and criticized by her, and the worker's ownbehaviour at the contract setting stage contributed to this.In contrast, satisfied clients and the worker appeared to havea positive shared perspective of the treatment process.
