New calibration estimator based on two auxiliary variables in stratified sampling

In recent years, calibration estimation has become an important field of research in survey sampling. This paper proposes a new calibration estimator for the population mean in the presence of two auxiliary variables in stratified sampling. The theory of new calibration estimator is given and optimum calibration weights are derived. A simulation study is carried out to performance of the proposed calibration estimator over other existing calibration estimators. The results reveal that the proposed calibration estimators are more efficient than other existing calibration estimators in stratified sampling.     

A comparison of artificial neural network and multinomial logit models in predicting mergers

A merger proposal discloses a bidder firm's desire to purchase the control rights in a target firm. Predicting who will propose (bidder candidacy) and who will receive (target candidacy) merger bids is important to investigate why firms merge and to measure the price impact of mergers. This study investigates the performance of artificial neural networks and multinomial logit models in predicting bidder and target candidacy. We use a comprehensive data set that covers the years 1979–2004 and includes all deals with publicly listed bidders and targets. We find that both models perform similarly while predicting target and non-merger firms. The multinomial logit model performs slightly better in predicting bidder firms.     

On the weighted mixed Liu-type estimator under unbiased stochastic restrictions

In this article, we introduce the weighted mixed Liu-type estimator (WMLTE) based on the weighted mixed and Liu-type estimator (LTE) in linear regression model. We will also present necessary and sufficient conditions for superiority of the weighted mixed Liu-type estimator over the weighted mixed estimator (WME) and Liu type estimator (LTE) in terms of mean square error matrix (MSEM) criterion. Finally, a numerical example and a Monte Carlo simulation is also given to show the theoretical results.     

Parental Grief and Serious Mental Illness: A Narrative

Serious mental illness is associated with substantial personal and interpersonal distress and life disruption for the sufferer and for his/her family. A common response to having and caring for a family member with a serious mental illness is feeling loss and grief. This paper presents a representative narrative that attempts to capture the essence of the experience as conveyed by 22 parents of adult children with a serious mental illness. The implication of the narrative is examined.
