"他者"作为比较文学形象学的概念,讲求作家创作与其阅读接受的外国文学间,并不总能用事实来阐明。《中国古代文学主题学思想研究》一书,分析中国古代中对外域文化现象载录时,体现的华夏中心主义等"他者"视界,还从以古今不同文化观念差异中,看中国古人对宇宙自然等现象的理解、古代社会两性关系的文学表现。以及"他者"眼光中,某些现象与问题的阶段性与差异性,如佛经母题在中国的接受变异。该书还试图结合一些主题史、母题史和意象主题史来展示主题学理论的具体运用,并总结古今文学研究实践中的主题学方法。
