Fusion of Nations and Integrity of Cultures--On Chen Yingque's Research on the History of the Wei-Jin-Nan-Bei Dynasties

As a most authoritative scholar, Chen Yingque made outstanding contributions to the research on the history of the Wei Jin Nan Bei Dynasties. Among them was his historical examination of the relation between nations and cultures. In his Preliminary to the Origin of Institutions of the Sui and the Tang and Political History of the Tang Dynasty, he argued that races and cultures are key factors in ancient history studies. In the field of fusion of nations and integrity of cultures, he put forward a proposition that "in the Bei Dynasty, the difference between the Hu and the Han lies in cultures rather than races", which has a great significance in the studies of fusion of Chinese nations.
