On the Nationalism in Contemporary Chinese Literature——A Case Study of Zhang Chengzhi

Zhang Chengzhi has been concentrating his efforts on the reflection on and exploration of ethnicity, religion and history, endeavoring to establish his ultimate concerns on humanity in his novels. He has gradually integrated his keen sense of risk and ethnicity into the profound dignity of man as an individual, behind which the primary parts of his nationalism in his novels, that is, the interlocking plots and awarenesses characterizing the West and the East, free imagination and meticulous self-examining, manifest. Zhang Chengzhi represents a cultural identity that has surpassed individual to collective, which can be studied from the angle of intellectuals as well as religion and belief. In his creation, all the values of the textual world about fight, conquest, home and ethnicity, including many scattered or even broken meanings, can be clearly seen.
