Missing covariate data occurs often in regression analysis. We study methods for estimating the regression coefficients in an assumed conditional mean function when some covariates are completely observed but other covariates are missing for some subjects. We adopt the semiparametric perspective of Robins et al. [Estimation of regression coefficients when some regressors are not always observed. J Amer Statist Assoc. 1994;89:846–866] on regression analyses with missing covariates, in which they pioneered the use of two working models, the working propensity score model and the working conditional score model. A recent approach to missing covariate data analysis is the empirical likelihood method of Qin et al. [Empirical likelihood in missing data problems. J Amer Statist Assoc. 2009;104:1492–1503], which effectively combines unbiased estimating equations. In this paper, we consider an alternative likelihood approach based on the full likelihood of the observed data. This full likelihood-based method enables us to generate estimators for the vector of the regression coefficients that are (a) asymptotically equivalent to those of Qin et al. [Empirical likelihood in missing data problems. J Amer Statist Assoc. 2009;104:1492–1503] when the working propensity score model is correctly specified, and (b) doubly robust, like the augmented inverse probability weighting (AIPW) estimators of Robins et al. [Estimation of regression coefficients when some regressors are not always observed. J Am Statist Assoc. 1994;89:846–866]. Thus, the proposed full likelihood-based estimators improve on the efficiency of the AIPW estimators when the working propensity score model is correct but the working conditional score model is possibly incorrect, and also improve on the empirical likelihood estimators of Qin, Zhang and Leung [Empirical likelihood in missing data problems. J Amer Statist Assoc. 2009;104:1492–1503] when the reverse is true, that is, the working conditional score model is correct but the working propensity score model is possibly incorrect. In addition, we consider a regression method for estimation of the regression coefficients when the working conditional score model is correctly specified; the asymptotic variance of the resulting estimator is no greater than the semiparametric variance bound characterized by the theory of Robins et al. [Estimation of regression coefficients when some regressors are not always observed. J Amer Statist Assoc. 1994;89:846–866]. Finally, we compare the finite-sample performance of various estimators in a simulation study.  相似文献

The mode of a distribution provides an important summary of data and is often estimated on the basis of some non‐parametric kernel density estimator. This article develops a new data analysis tool called modal linear regression in order to explore high‐dimensional data. Modal linear regression models the conditional mode of a response Y given a set of predictors x as a linear function of x . Modal linear regression differs from standard linear regression in that standard linear regression models the conditional mean (as opposed to mode) of Y as a linear function of x . We propose an expectation–maximization algorithm in order to estimate the regression coefficients of modal linear regression. We also provide asymptotic properties for the proposed estimator without the symmetric assumption of the error density. Our empirical studies with simulated data and real data demonstrate that the proposed modal regression gives shorter predictive intervals than mean linear regression, median linear regression and MM‐estimators.  相似文献

Summary. In many biomedical studies, covariates are subject to measurement error. Although it is well known that the regression coefficients estimators can be substantially biased if the measurement error is not accommodated, there has been little study of the effect of covariate measurement error on the estimation of the dependence between bivariate failure times. We show that the dependence parameter estimator in the Clayton–Oakes model can be considerably biased if the measurement error in the covariate is not accommodated. In contrast with the typical bias towards the null for marginal regression coefficients, the dependence parameter can be biased in either direction. We introduce a bias reduction technique for the bivariate survival function in copula models while assuming an additive measurement error model and replicated measurement for the covariates, and we study the large and small sample properties of the dependence parameter estimator proposed.  相似文献

In this article, we consider statistical inference for longitudinal partial linear models when the response variable is sometimes missing with missingness probability depending on the covariate that is measured with error. A generalized empirical likelihood (GEL) method is proposed by combining correction attenuation and quadratic inference functions. The method that takes into consideration the correlation within groups is used to estimate the regression coefficients. Furthermore, residual-adjusted empirical likelihood (EL) is employed for estimating the baseline function so that undersmoothing is avoided. The empirical log-likelihood ratios are proven to be asymptotically Chi-squared, and the corresponding confidence regions for the parameters of interest are then constructed. Compared with methods based on NAs, the GEL does not require consistent estimators for the asymptotic variance and bias. The numerical study is conducted to compare the performance of the EL and the normal approximation-based method, and a real example is analysed.  相似文献

We consider statistical inference for longitudinal partially linear models when the response variable is sometimes missing with missingness probability depending on the covariate that is measured with error. The block empirical likelihood procedure is used to estimate the regression coefficients and residual adjusted block empirical likelihood is employed for the baseline function. This leads us to prove a nonparametric version of Wilk's theorem. Compared with methods based on normal approximations, our proposed method does not require a consistent estimators for the asymptotic variance and bias. An application to a longitudinal study is used to illustrate the procedure developed here. A simulation study is also reported.  相似文献

We consider two consistent estimators for the parameters of the linear predictor in the Poisson regression model, where the covariate is measured with errors. The measurement errors are assumed to be normally distributed with known error variance σ u 2 . The SQS estimator, based on a conditional mean-variance model, takes the distribution of the latent covariate into account, and this is here assumed to be a normal distribution. The CS estimator, based on a corrected score function, does not use the distribution of the latent covariate. Nevertheless, for small σ u 2 , both estimators have identical asymptotic covariance matrices up to the order of σ u 2 . We also compare the consistent estimators to the naive estimator, which is based on replacing the latent covariate with its (erroneously) measured counterpart. The naive estimator is biased, but has a smaller covariance matrix than the consistent estimators (at least up to the order of σ u 2 ).  相似文献

Covariate adjusted regression (CAR) is a recently proposed adjustment method for regression analysis where both the response and predictors are not directly observed [?entürk, D., Müller, H.G., 2005. Covariate adjusted regression. Biometrika 92, 75–89]. The available data have been distorted by unknown functions of an observable confounding covariate. CAR provides consistent estimators for the coefficients of the regression between the variables of interest, adjusted for the confounder. We develop a broader class of partial covariate adjusted regression (PCAR) models to accommodate both distorted and undistorted (adjusted/unadjusted) predictors. The PCAR model allows for unadjusted predictors, such as age, gender and demographic variables, which are common in the analysis of biomedical and epidemiological data. The available estimation and inference procedures for CAR are shown to be invalid for the proposed PCAR model. We propose new estimators and develop new inference tools for the more general PCAR setting. In particular, we establish the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators and propose consistent estimators of their asymptotic variances. Finite sample properties of the proposed estimators are investigated using simulation studies and the method is also illustrated with a Pima Indians diabetes data set.  相似文献

Researchers in the medical, health, and social sciences routinely encounter ordinal variables such as self‐reports of health or happiness. When modelling ordinal outcome variables, it is common to have covariates, for example, attitudes, family income, retrospective variables, measured with error. As is well known, ignoring even random error in covariates can bias coefficients and hence prejudice the estimates of effects. We propose an instrumental variable approach to the estimation of a probit model with an ordinal response and mismeasured predictor variables. We obtain likelihood‐based and method of moments estimators that are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed under general conditions. These estimators are easy to compute, perform well and are robust against the normality assumption for the measurement errors in our simulation studies. The proposed method is applied to both simulated and real data. The Canadian Journal of Statistics 47: 653–667; 2019 © 2019 Statistical Society of Canada  相似文献

Nakamura (1990) introduced an approach to estimation in measurement error models based on a corrected score function, and claimed that the estimators obtained are consistent for functional models. Proof of the claim essentially assumed the existence of a corrected log-likelihood for which differentiation with respect to model parameters can be interchanged with conditional expectation taken with respect to the measurement error distributions, given the response variables and true covariates. This paper deals with simple yet practical models for which the above assumption is false, i.e. a corrected score function for the model may not be obtained through differentiating a corrected log-likelihood although it exists. Alternative regularity conditions with no reference to log-likelihood are given, under which the corrected score functions yield consistent and asymptotically normal estimators. Application to functional comparative calibration yields interesting results.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with model averaging procedure for varying-coefficient partially linear models with missing responses. The profile least-squares estimation process and inverse probability weighted method are employed to estimate regression coefficients of the partially restricted models, in which the propensity score is estimated by the covariate balancing propensity score method. The estimators of the linear parameters are shown to be asymptotically normal. Then we develop the focused information criterion, formulate the frequentist model averaging estimators and construct the corresponding confidence intervals. Some simulation studies are conducted to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed methods. We find that the covariate balancing propensity score improves the performance of the inverse probability weighted estimator. We also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model averaging estimators over those of existing strategies in terms of mean squared error and coverage probability. Finally, our approach is further applied to a real data example.  相似文献

This study examines estimation and inference based on quantile regression for parametric nonlinear models with an integrated time series covariate. We first derive the limiting distribution of the nonlinear quantile regression estimator and then consider testing for parameter restrictions, when the regression function is specified as an asymptotically homogeneous function. We also study linear-in-parameter regression models when the regression function is given by integrable regression functions as well as asymptotically homogeneous regression functions. We, furthermore, propose a fully modified estimator to reduce the bias in the original estimator under a certain set of conditions. Finally, simulation studies show that the estimators behave well, especially when the regression error term has a fat-tailed distribution.  相似文献

Bootstrapping the conditional copula   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper is concerned with inference about the dependence or association between two random variables conditionally upon the given value of a covariate. A way to describe such a conditional dependence is via a conditional copula function. Nonparametric estimators for a conditional copula then lead to nonparametric estimates of conditional association measures such as a conditional Kendall's tau. The limiting distributions of nonparametric conditional copula estimators are rather involved. In this paper we propose a bootstrap procedure for approximating these distributions and their characteristics, and establish its consistency. We apply the proposed bootstrap procedure for constructing confidence intervals for conditional association measures, such as a conditional Blomqvist beta and a conditional Kendall's tau. The performances of the proposed methods are investigated via a simulation study involving a variety of models, ranging from models in which the dependence (weak or strong) on the covariate is only through the copula and not through the marginals, to models in which this dependence appears in both the copula and the marginal distributions. As a conclusion we provide practical recommendations for constructing bootstrap-based confidence intervals for the discussed conditional association measures.  相似文献

It has been found that, for a variety of probability distributions, there is a surprising linear relation between mode, mean, and median. In this article, the relation between mode, mean, and median regression functions is assumed to follow a simple parametric model. We propose a semiparametric conditional mode (mode regression) estimation for an unknown (unimodal) conditional distribution function in the context of regression model, so that any m-step-ahead mean and median forecasts can then be substituted into the resultant model to deliver m-step-ahead mode prediction. In the semiparametric model, Least Squared Estimator (LSEs) for the model parameters and the simultaneous estimation of the unknown mean and median regression functions by the local linear kernel method are combined to infer about the parametric and nonparametric components of the proposed model. The asymptotic normality of these estimators is derived, and the asymptotic distribution of the parameter estimates is also given and is shown to follow usual parametric rates in spite of the presence of the nonparametric component in the model. These results are applied to obtain a data-based test for the dependence of mode regression over mean and median regression under a regression model.  相似文献

Efficient inference for regression models requires that the heteroscedasticity be taken into account. We consider statistical inference under heteroscedasticity in a semiparametric measurement error regression model, in which some covariates are measured with errors. This paper has multiple components. First, we propose a new method for testing the heteroscedasticity. The advantages of the proposed method over the existing ones are that it does not need any nonparametric estimation and does not involve any mismeasured variables. Second, we propose a new two-step estimator for the error variances if there is heteroscedasticity. Finally, we propose a weighted estimating equation-based estimator (WEEBE) for the regression coefficients and establish its asymptotic properties. Compared with existing estimators, the proposed WEEBE is asymptotically more efficient, avoids undersmoothing the regressor functions and requires less restrictions on the observed regressors. Simulation studies show that the proposed test procedure and estimators have nice finite sample performance. A real data set is used to illustrate the utility of our proposed methods.  相似文献

To make efficient inference for mean of a response variable when the data are missing at random and the dimension of covariate is not low, we construct three bias-corrected empirical likelihood (EL) methods in conjunction with dimension-reduced kernel estimation of propensity or/and conditional mean response function. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum dimension-reduced EL estimators are established. We further study the asymptotic properties of the resulting dimension-reduced EL ratio functions and the corresponding EL confidence intervals for the response mean are constructed. The finite-sample performance of the proposed estimators is studied through simulation, and an application to HIV-CD4 data set is also presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we study inference in a heteroscedastic measurement error model with known error variances. Instead of the normal distribution for the random components, we develop a model that assumes a skew-t distribution for the true covariate and a centred Student's t distribution for the error terms. The proposed model enables to accommodate skewness and heavy-tailedness in the data, while the degrees of freedom of the distributions can be different. Maximum likelihood estimates are computed via an EM-type algorithm. The behaviour of the estimators is also assessed in a simulation study. Finally, the approach is illustrated with a real data set from a methods comparison study in Analytical Chemistry.  相似文献

Since Dorfman's seminal work on the subject, group testing has been widely adopted in epidemiological studies. In Dorfman's context of detecting syphilis, group testing entails pooling blood samples and testing the pools, as opposed to testing individual samples. A negative pool indicates all individuals in the pool free of syphilis antigen, whereas a positive pool suggests one or more individuals carry the antigen. With covariate information collected, researchers have considered regression models that allow one to estimate covariate‐adjusted disease probability. We study maximum likelihood estimators of covariate effects in these regression models when the group testing response is prone to error. We show that, when compared with inference drawn from individual testing data, inference based on group testing data can be more resilient to response misclassification in terms of bias and efficiency. We provide valuable guidance on designing the group composition to alleviate adverse effects of misclassification on statistical inference.  相似文献

Ranked-set sampling (RSS) and judgment post-stratification (JPS) use ranking information to obtain more efficient inference than is possible using simple random sampling. Both methods were developed with subjective, judgment-based rankings in mind, but the idea of ranking using a covariate has received a lot of attention. We provide evidence here that when rankings are done using a covariate, the standard RSS and JPS mean estimators no longer make efficient use of the available information. We first show that when rankings are done using a covariate, the standard nonparametric mean estimators in JPS and unbalanced RSS are inadmissible under squared error loss. We then show that when rankings are done using a covariate, nonparametric regression techniques yield mean estimators that tend to be significantly more efficient than the standard RSS and JPS mean estimators. We conclude that the standard estimators are best reserved for settings where only subjective, judgment-based rankings are available.  相似文献

This article deals with parameter estimation in the Cox proportional hazards model when covariates are measured with error. We consider both the classical additive measurement error model and a more general model which represents the mis-measured version of the covariate as an arbitrary linear function of the true covariate plus random noise. Only moment conditions are imposed on the distributions of the covariates and measurement error. Under the assumption that the covariates are measured precisely for a validation set, we develop a class of estimating equations for the vector-valued regression parameter by correcting the partial likelihood score function. The resultant estimators are proven to be consistent and asymptotically normal with easily estimated variances. Furthermore, a corrected version of the Breslow estimator for the cumulative hazard function is developed, which is shown to be uniformly consistent and, upon proper normalization, converges weakly to a zero-mean Gaussian process. Simulation studies indicate that the asymptotic approximations work well for practical sample sizes. The situation in which replicate measurements (instead of a validation set) are available is also studied.  相似文献

Measurement error models constitute a wide class of models that include linear and nonlinear regression models. They are very useful to model many real-life phenomena, particularly in the medical and biological areas. The great advantage of these models is that, in some sense, they can be represented as mixed effects models, allowing us to implement well-known techniques, like the EM-algorithm for the parameter estimation. In this paper, we consider a class of multivariate measurement error models where the observed response and/or covariate are not fully observed, i.e., the observations are subject to certain threshold values below or above which the measurements are not quantifiable. Consequently, these observations are considered censored. We assume a Student-t distribution for the unobserved true values of the mismeasured covariate and the error term of the model, providing a robust alternative for parameter estimation. Our approach relies on a likelihood-based inference using an EM-type algorithm. The proposed method is illustrated through some simulation studies and the analysis of an AIDS clinical trial dataset.  相似文献
