Learning to Leave: Problems of Graduating Clinical Observations and Strategies

Abstract

Like other moments of significant transition and separation, graduating from college involves a complex set of feelings and behaviors. Stress can be associated with various steps in this process, including identifying and completing tasks, anticipating change, participating in ceremony, and moving on. Common presenting problems and counseling strategies are described so that health workers can understand these dynamics within their developmental context for young adults. Leaving can be a skill some students need to acknowledge and learn, so that they can continue to grow.     

More than Surface Tension: Femmes in Families

SUMMARY

This article raises questions about the lack of scholarly focus on butch/femme couples and their absence in studies of lesbian couples and family-building. In an era of lesbian marriage and lesbian parenting, femme and butch coupling and family-building remain unspoken topics within family studies, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT)–specific research. Moving beyond a focus on eroticism within the femme/butch couple, questions about how gender expression impacts other relationships dynamics, including the maintenance of long-term relationships, power and intimacy, domestic chores and child-rearing, are raised. The femme role in “homemaking,” that is, building and maintaining families, especially needs further exploration.     

Oscar Pistorius and the melancholy of intersectionality

The alleged shooting by Paralympian and Olympian athlete Oscar Pistorius of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp has led to strong reactions worldwide. Scholars in the field of disability studies have expressed shock and disappointment in response both to the death itself and to its implications for the representation of disability. In South Africa in the wake of the death of Ms Steenkamp, much has been made both by critics of Pistorius and by his defenders about his status as a white South African man, but little has been said about disability issues. This silence in South Africa about disability as a possible identity factor in this case draws attention to the extent to which disability questions remain profoundly raced and gendered, and influenced by the colonial and apartheid past. The tragic alleged shooting by Oscar Pistorius draws attention back to how important intersectionality is to understanding disability in South Africa and other unequal societies.     

长期大强度体育训练对人类生育性别的影响

目的:研究长期体育训练对人类生育性别的影响。方法:采用问卷调查的方法,对庆阳市及周边大、中专院校和中小学校体育工作者生育子女性别进行了调查分析。结果:仅男性一方或夫妻双方均常年从事体育训练,其生育子女中女孩显著多于男孩(P<0.01);而仅女性一方常年从事体育训练,其子女性别无明显差异(P>0.05)。结论:长期进行体育训练的男性,由于体内环境的变化,所生育子女女性多于男性。     

社会性别视野下的老年女性养老经济收入研究——以镇江为例

为了研究老年女性养老经济收入的现状，本文利用《2007年镇江市代际和谐与养老模式实证研究》调查中465份60岁以上被调查者的数据，从社会性别公平的理性出发，阐述了两性在养老保险享有、收入数目及收入来源等方面的差异，分析性别对老年人养老经济收入的影响。调查分析证实了社会性别在养老经济收入上的差异及其对老年人养老经济收入的显著影响。为了保证老年女性有充足的养老经济收入，应该大力完善配偶遗属补贴制度、改革社会养老保险制度，并消除就业中的性别歧视和职业隔离。

Young Adult Relationship Values at the Intersection of Gender and Sexuality

Recent decades have brought significant social changes in the industrialized West that may influence young adults' attitudes about intimate relationships, including changes in gender expectations and behaviors and changes in sexual attitudes and practices. We used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 14,121) to compare men to women and sexual minorities to heterosexuals on ratings of the importance of love, faithfulness, commitment, financial security, and racial homogamy for successful relationships. We found that nearly all young adults adhere to dominant relationship values inherent in the romantic love ideology; we found, however, modest but significant differences by gender and sexual identity in relationship values. Significant interactions demonstrated that gender and sexual identity intersect to uniquely influence relationship views.     

对《劳动合同法》的社会性别分析

《劳动合同法》以构建和发展和谐稳定的劳动关系为宗旨,进一步完善了劳动合同制度,明确了劳动合同双方当事人的权利和义务,保护了劳动者的合法权益。但是,从社会性别的视角出发,其在维护妇女的劳动权益,尤其在妇女劳动权益保护问题上仍然存在许多问题或漏洞,亟待完善。     

Children's and Adolescents' Decisions about Sharing Money with Others

Two hundred and ninety-four participants aged between 7 and 17 years of age were asked to share out money between themselves and another, imaginary group. Individual responses were recorded as well as responses after discussion in a group with two other participants. The distribution task took place in two different experimental conditions that either gave participants a free choice about how much to offer to the other group or involved making a strategic offer to avoid the other group rejecting an offer and losing all the money. From 10 years of age onwards, when allowed to choose freely how much to share, boys made progressively less generous offers than girls whereas girls' offers remained the same with age. However, when inter-group strategic constraints were present, there were few gender differences from 10 years of age. The order in which games were presented was a powerful influence on the offers that participants made.
