New information and social trust: asymmetry and perseverance of attributions about hazard managers.

It has been argued that news about negative events has a much stronger effect on decreasing social trust than does news about positive events on increasing it. This asymmetry principle of trust was investigated in two surveys that also investigated the perseverance of trust. The possibility that established trust attributions persevere in the face of new information raises questions about the limits of trust asymmetry. The two studies yielded evidence that both type of news (good versus bad) and initial general trust in the nuclear power industry or the food supply industry affected level of trust. Compared to individuals trusting the industry, those distrusting the industry exhibited less trust following both bad and good news events. Study I also found that judged informativeness and judged positiveness of news events were affected by type of news and general trust of the industry. Individuals low in general trust of the nuclear power industry judged both bad news and good news as less positive than did those high in general trust. Those low in general trust judged bad news as more informative than good news and than did those high in general trust. An important implication of the perseverance of trust is to focus attention on including not only the effects of information about specific events and actions, but also on the judgment processes underlying social trust. The Salient Value Similarity model is suggested as one way of accounting for these psychological processes.     

Older people’s perspectives on dignity: the benefits and challenges of a qualitative longitudinal approach to researching experiences of later life

Abstract

This article discusses findings from a qualitative longitudinal study of dignity in later life, which focused on the perspectives of older people at a time when their need for help and support was increasing as a result of long-term illness. It reflects critically on the methodology for its ability to generate knowledge about this eventful and unstable period of the life-course. It is argued that a longitudinal qualitative approach provides the optimum conditions for researching older people’s perspectives on their health and illness as well as on their experiences of being helped and supported. It sheds light on the changes they faced in their relationships, their home environments and their daily lives as well as how they dealt with these changes while maintaining their dignity.     

Perseverance and passion for achieving long-term goals: transcultural adaptation and validation of the Grit-S scale / Perseverancia y pasión por la consecución de objetivos a largo plazo: adaptación transcultural y validación de la escala Grit-S

The objective of this study was to undertake the transcultural adaptation and validation of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) to measure university students’ levels of perseverance and passion for achieving long-term goals. To accomplish this, the Grit-S scale was linguistically and culturally adapted from English to Spanish via the Translation, Review, Adjudication, Pre-testing and Documentation method. After that, the adapted scale was administered to a convenience sample of 1,129 university students comprised of 29.6% males and 70.4% females with a mean age of 21, and finally, its psychometric properties were analysed and compared to the original version. The results reveal acceptable values for the internal consistency of the total scale (α = .71) and outstanding fit indexes for the proposed two-factor structural model (i.e., Consistency of Interest and Perseverance of Effort) (RMSEA = .041, CFI = .96), and the parameters of transcultural adaptation were similar to those in its original version.

What is the best model of grit among junior high students: Model selection,measurement invariance,and group difference

Grit is a non-cognitive construct based on personality theory that fosters individuals to perform better and achieve their goals. Previous researchers validated the psychometric properties of grit for adults and older adolescents but ignored that for early adolescents. An inappropriate measurement model may mislead researchers and teachers to misapprehend grit measures. This study aimed to identify the most appropriate grit model for early adolescents. Three factorial models (i.e., two-factor, one-factor, and bi-factor models) were evaluated and compared. Subsequently, we tested the measurement invariance (MI) and mean differences of grit across grade and gender groups. Participants were 672 junior high students (51% boys, aged 12–15) in Taiwan. The results showed that the two-factor model was the best grit model. This finding revealed that adolescents tend to comprehend grit with two distinct concepts, consistency in interest (CI) and perseverance of effort (PE), instead of a single compound. In addition, the results showed that the two-factor model retained strong invariance for grade and gender, justifying the comparison of grit scores over grade and gender groups for junior high students. Moreover, we did not find any group difference in the facets of grit by gender and grades. This result showed that grit is a stable personality for junior high students. The relationships between grit constructs and criteria, such as conscientiousness and academic achievements, were tested and discussed.
