David Hawks教授翻译的《红楼梦》堪称翻译界的经典,其文学性、艺术性很难令人企及,但是如果从后殖民主义的角度去解读The Story of the Stone,则可以察觉,其中有许多挥之不去的后殖民主义的情愫。文章从“潇湘妃子”的英译揭示霍译《红楼梦》中的后殖民主义的情结。     

POSTCOLONIALISM AND GLOBALIZATION: TOWARDS A HISTORICIZATION OF THEIR INTER-RELATION

This article distinguishes between critical and reconciliatory postcolonialisms, arguing that the former seeks radical alternatives to modernity based on non-Western traditions and lifeways, while the latter works to reconcile colonized peoples to colonialism. It argues further that the category of globalization has, for the most part, superceded that of 'postcolonialism' and that critical postcolonialism needs to be seen not simply as globalization's enemy but (in part) as its effect. That is, globalization and critical postcolonialism have a weakly dialectical relation, a case made by examining the recent Maori renaissance in New Zealand. What are the implications of this way of thinking for history? By examining two late eighteenth century texts, Ossian's poems and Sir William Chambers' 'A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening', the article suggests that the histories of globalization and postcolonialism have always been intertwined.     

REGARDING IRELAND IN A POST-COLONIAL FRAME

This essay considers the applicability of postcolonial theory to Irish culture and history. It develops the concept of multiple rhythms or temporalities of social struggle for which only that of nationalism is determined punctually by the struggle for the state. The domination of Irish historiography by state-oriented narratives occludes the histories and the formal or organizational aspects of other forms of social movement, such that the postcolonial project is directed simultaneously towards the mapping of such alternative movements and to the critique of statist historiographies, whether imperialist, nationalist or ‘revisionist’. Where postcolonial theory has tended to emphasize the ‘hybrid’ nature of colonial cultures, this essay prefers to focus on the productive interface between the incommensurable social and cultural formations of colonial modernity and colonized non-modernity. At this interface emerge continually both new subaltern social formations and practices, which cannot be understood as ‘traditional’ and new forms of colonial state institution that are summoned into being by anti-colonial practices, for which the model of an advanced state coming to bear on a backward population is clearly inadequate. The essay draws from the history of agrarian movements in Ireland and banditry in the Philippines and from contemporary techniques of state surveillance and resistance to it in Northern Ireland.     

A postcolonial perspective on language and difference in social work: bilingual practitioners working in the linguistic borderlands

This paper employs a postcolonial perspective to explore the issue of language identity and difference in social work. It presents a case study of three bilingual practitioners who acquired English either as a result of colonial or postcolonial language policies in their respective countries of birth and who at the time of the study were residing in Australia. These informants demonstrate a variety of patterns of cross-border mobility currently being exercised by social workers in an era marked by transnational activities such as education and practice. The three accounts are mediated through a postcolonial lens in order to reveal some of the distinct linguistic dimensions of social work in terms of how and why personal language biography may become a salient issue in practice. The discussion that follows illustrates the potential of a postcolonial perspective for enhancing understandings of language in social work in terms of four themes: the relocation of difference from the margins to the centre; the historical dimensions of language identity; the spatial dimensions of linguistic relations; and the role of English in knowledge production.

在后殖民的翻译研究中，“杂合”作为一种新的翻译策略，是必然会在语言文化的交流中出现的。在经过归化和异化的翻译策略的选择之后，杂舍因经过对语言文化的有效吸收和融合，获得一些新的不曾具有的优点，也为更多的翻译研究者所提倡。适度的杂合能实现对弱势文化的优化与超越，对强势文化的抵抗，也是后殖民语境下弱势文化由弱变强的必经之路。

The term "Other" is a key concept in the framework of postcolonialism.This paper attempts to analyze the native black people’s role-"the Other" in the process of colonization.The British writer Doris Lessing finds the unltimate expression in her first novel The Grass Is Singing.With the settlement of the colonizers,the South Africa has been rendered by the white colonizers as "the Other World" and the native people are regarded as "the Other" who are degraded into unspeakable animals by white people.
