We investigate empirical likelihood for the additive hazards model with current status data. An empirical log-likelihood ratio for a vector or subvector of regression parameters is defined and its limiting distribution is shown to be a standard chi-squared distribution. The proposed inference procedure enables us to make empirical likelihood-based inference for the regression parameters. Finite sample performance of the proposed method is assessed in simulation studies to compare with that of a normal approximation method, it shows that the empirical likelihood method provides more accurate inference than the normal approximation method. A real data example is used for illustration.

Large cohort studies are commonly launched to study the risk effect of genetic variants or other risk factors on a chronic disorder. In these studies, family data are often collected to provide additional information for the purpose of improving the inference results. Statistical analysis of the family data can be very challenging due to the missing observations of genotypes, incomplete records of disease occurrences in family members, and the complicated dependence attributed to the shared genetic background and environmental factors. In this article, we investigate a class of logistic models with family-shared random effects to tackle these challenges, and develop a robust regression method based on the conditional logistic technique for statistical inference. An expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm with fast computation speed is developed to handle the missing genotypes. The proposed estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Additionally, a score test based on the proposed method is derived to test the genetic effect. Extensive simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed method performs well in finite samples in terms of estimate accuracy, robustness and computational speed. The proposed procedure is applied to an Alzheimer's disease study.

Efficient inference for regression models requires that the heteroscedasticity be taken into account. We consider statistical inference under heteroscedasticity in a semiparametric measurement error regression model, in which some covariates are measured with errors. This paper has multiple components. First, we propose a new method for testing the heteroscedasticity. The advantages of the proposed method over the existing ones are that it does not need any nonparametric estimation and does not involve any mismeasured variables. Second, we propose a new two-step estimator for the error variances if there is heteroscedasticity. Finally, we propose a weighted estimating equation-based estimator (WEEBE) for the regression coefficients and establish its asymptotic properties. Compared with existing estimators, the proposed WEEBE is asymptotically more efficient, avoids undersmoothing the regressor functions and requires less restrictions on the observed regressors. Simulation studies show that the proposed test procedure and estimators have nice finite sample performance. A real data set is used to illustrate the utility of our proposed methods.

In this paper, we investigate empirical likelihood (EL) inference for density-weighted average derivatives in nonparametric multiple regression models. A simply adjusted empirical log-likelihood ratio for the vector of density-weighted average derivatives is defined and its limiting distribution is shown to be a standard Chi-square distribution. To increase the accuracy and coverage probability of confidence regions, an EL inference procedure for the rescaled parameter vector is proposed by using a linear instrumental variables regression. The new method shares the same properties of the regular EL method with i.i.d. samples. For example, estimation of limiting variances and covariances is not needed. A Monte Carlo simulation study is presented to compare the new method with the normal approximation method and an existing EL method.

Classical bridge regression is known to possess many desirable statistical properties such as oracle, sparsity, and unbiasedness. One outstanding disadvantage of bridge regularization, however, is that it lacks a systematic approach to inference, reducing its flexibility in practical applications. In this study, we propose bridge regression from a Bayesian perspective. Unlike classical bridge regression that summarizes inference using a single point estimate, the proposed Bayesian method provides uncertainty estimates of the regression parameters, allowing coherent inference through the posterior distribution. Under a sparsity assumption on the high-dimensional parameter, we provide sufficient conditions for strong posterior consistency of the Bayesian bridge prior. On simulated datasets, we show that the proposed method performs well compared to several competing methods across a wide range of scenarios. Application to two real datasets further revealed that the proposed method performs as well as or better than published methods while offering the advantage of posterior inference.

Abstract

This paper focuses on inference based on the confidence distributions of the nonparametric regression function and its derivatives, in which dependent inferences are combined by obtaining information about their dependency structure. We first give a motivating example in production operation system to illustrate the necessity of the problems studied in this paper in practical applications. A goodness-of-fit test for polynomial regression model is proposed on the basis of the idea of combined confidence distribution inference, which is the Fisher’s combination statistic in some cases. On the basis of this testing results, a combined estimator for the p-order derivative of nonparametric regression function is provided as well as its large sample size properties. Consequently, the performances of the proposed test and estimation method are illustrated by three specific examples. Finally, the motivating example is analyzed in detail. The simulated and real data examples illustrate the good performance and practicability of the proposed methods based on confidence distribution.

Efficient statistical inference on nonignorable missing data is a challenging problem. This paper proposes a new estimation procedure based on composite quantile regression (CQR) for linear regression models with nonignorable missing data, that is applicable even with high-dimensional covariates. A parametric model is assumed for modelling response probability, which is estimated by the empirical likelihood approach. Local identifiability of the proposed strategy is guaranteed on the basis of an instrumental variable approach. A set of data-based adaptive weights constructed via an empirical likelihood method is used to weight CQR functions. The proposed method is resistant to heavy-tailed errors or outliers in the response. An adaptive penalisation method for variable selection is proposed to achieve sparsity with high-dimensional covariates. Limiting distributions of the proposed estimators are derived. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed methodologies. An application to the ACTG 175 data is analysed.

This article considers the problem of statistical inference in linear regression models with dependent errors. A sieve-type generalized least squares (GLS) procedure is proposed based on an autoregressive approximation to the generating mechanism of the errors. The asymptotic properties of the sieve-type GLS estimator are established under general conditions, including mixingale-type conditions as well as conditions which allow for long-range dependence in the stochastic regressors and/or the errors. A Monte Carlo study examines the finite-sample properties of the method for testing regression hypotheses.

A Bayesian elastic net approach is presented for variable selection and coefficient estimation in linear regression models. A simple Gibbs sampling algorithm was developed for posterior inference using a location-scale mixture representation of the Bayesian elastic net prior for the regression coefficients. The penalty parameters are chosen through an empirical method that maximizes the data marginal likelihood. Both simulated and real data examples show that the proposed method performs well in comparison to the other approaches.

Abstract.  We propose an easy to implement method for making small sample parametric inference about the root of an estimating equation expressible as a quadratic form in normal random variables. It is based on saddlepoint approximations to the distribution of the estimating equation whose unique root is a parameter's maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), while substituting conditional MLEs for the remaining (nuisance) parameters. Monotoncity of the estimating equation in its parameter argument enables us to relate these approximations to those for the estimator of interest. The proposed method is equivalent to a parametric bootstrap percentile approach where Monte Carlo simulation is replaced by saddlepoint approximation. It finds applications in many areas of statistics including, nonlinear regression, time series analysis, inference on ratios of regression parameters in linear models and calibration. We demonstrate the method in the context of some classical examples from nonlinear regression models and ratios of regression parameter problems. Simulation results for these show that the proposed method, apart from being generally easier to implement, yields confidence intervals with lengths and coverage probabilities that compare favourably with those obtained from several competing methods proposed in the literature over the past half-century.

Covariate adjusted regression (CAR) is a recently proposed adjustment method for regression analysis where both the response and predictors are not directly observed [?entürk, D., Müller, H.G., 2005. Covariate adjusted regression. Biometrika 92, 75–89]. The available data have been distorted by unknown functions of an observable confounding covariate. CAR provides consistent estimators for the coefficients of the regression between the variables of interest, adjusted for the confounder. We develop a broader class of partial covariate adjusted regression (PCAR) models to accommodate both distorted and undistorted (adjusted/unadjusted) predictors. The PCAR model allows for unadjusted predictors, such as age, gender and demographic variables, which are common in the analysis of biomedical and epidemiological data. The available estimation and inference procedures for CAR are shown to be invalid for the proposed PCAR model. We propose new estimators and develop new inference tools for the more general PCAR setting. In particular, we establish the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators and propose consistent estimators of their asymptotic variances. Finite sample properties of the proposed estimators are investigated using simulation studies and the method is also illustrated with a Pima Indians diabetes data set.

The article considers nonparametric inference for quantile regression models with time-varying coefficients. The errors and covariates of the regression are assumed to belong to a general class of locally stationary processes and are allowed to be cross-dependent. Simultaneous confidence tubes (SCTs) and integrated squared difference tests (ISDTs) are proposed for simultaneous nonparametric inference of the latter models with asymptotically correct coverage probabilities and Type I error rates. Our methodologies are shown to possess certain asymptotically optimal properties. Furthermore, we propose an information criterion that performs consistent model selection for nonparametric quantile regression models of nonstationary time series. For implementation, a wild bootstrap procedure is proposed, which is shown to be robust to the dependent and nonstationary data structure. Our method is applied to studying the asymmetric and time-varying dynamic structures of the U.S. unemployment rate since the 1940s. We consider estimating the mode of a response given an error‐prone covariate. It is shown that ignoring measurement error typically leads to inconsistent inference for the conditional mode of the response given the true covariate, as well as misleading inference for regression coefficients in the conditional mode model. To account for measurement error, we first employ the Monte Carlo corrected score method (Novick & Stefanski, 2002) to obtain an unbiased score function based on which the regression coefficients can be estimated consistently. To relax the normality assumption on measurement error this method requires, we propose another method where deconvoluting kernels are used to construct an objective function that is maximized to obtain consistent estimators of the regression coefficients. Besides rigorous investigation on asymptotic properties of the new estimators, we study their finite sample performance via extensive simulation experiments, and find that the proposed methods substantially outperform a naive inference method that ignores measurement error. High survey nonresponse in unemployment duration studies may have a strong effect on inference if the so called causal mechanism is present. A robust method of testing the causal nonresponse is proposed for data sets where survey information can be combined with complete administrative records. It is assumed that population distribution follows approximately the Cox regression model. Formal justification of the method and a comparative simulation study are included.

Tsou (2003a) proposed a parametric procedure for making robust inference for mean regression parameters in the context of generalized linear models. This robust procedure is extended to model variance heterogeneity. The normal working model is adjusted to become asymptotically robust for inference about regression parameters of the variance function for practically all continuous response variables. The connection between the novel robust variance regression model and the estimating equations approach is also provided.

The maximum likelihood (ML) method is used to estimate the unknown Gamma regression (GR) coefficients. In the presence of multicollinearity, the variance of the ML method becomes overstated and the inference based on the ML method may not be trustworthy. To combat multicollinearity, the Liu estimator has been used. In this estimator, estimation of the Liu parameter d is an important problem. A few estimation methods are available in the literature for estimating such a parameter. This study has considered some of these methods and also proposed some new methods for estimation of the d. The Monte Carlo simulation study has been conducted to assess the performance of the proposed methods where the mean squared error (MSE) is considered as a performance criterion. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation and application results, it is shown that the Liu estimator is always superior to the ML and recommendation about which best Liu parameter should be used in the Liu estimator for the GR model is given.

Regression Kink With an Unknown Threshold
This article explores estimation and inference in a regression kink model with an unknown threshold. A regression kink model (or continuous threshold model) is a threshold regression constrained to be everywhere continuous with a kink at an unknown threshold. We present methods for estimation, to test for the presence of the threshold, for inference on the regression parameters, and for inference on the regression function. A novel finding is that inference on the regression function is nonstandard since the regression function is a nondifferentiable function of the parameters. We apply recently developed methods for inference on nondifferentiable functions. The theory is illustrated by an application to the growth and debt problem introduced by Reinhart and Rogoff, using their long-span time-series for the United States.

In this article, we consider statistical inference for longitudinal partial linear models when the response variable is sometimes missing with missingness probability depending on the covariate that is measured with error. A generalized empirical likelihood (GEL) method is proposed by combining correction attenuation and quadratic inference functions. The method that takes into consideration the correlation within groups is used to estimate the regression coefficients. Furthermore, residual-adjusted empirical likelihood (EL) is employed for estimating the baseline function so that undersmoothing is avoided. The empirical log-likelihood ratios are proven to be asymptotically Chi-squared, and the corresponding confidence regions for the parameters of interest are then constructed. Compared with methods based on NAs, the GEL does not require consistent estimators for the asymptotic variance and bias. The numerical study is conducted to compare the performance of the EL and the normal approximation-based method, and a real example is analysed.
