Spectral Estimation of Covolatility from Noisy Observations Using Local Weights

We propose localized spectral estimators for the quadratic covariation and the spot covolatility of diffusion processes, which are observed discretely with additive observation noise. The appropriate estimation for time‐varying volatilities is based on an asymptotic equivalence of the underlying statistical model to a white‐noise model with correlation and volatility processes being constant over small time intervals. The asymptotic equivalence of the continuous‐time and discrete‐time experiments is proved by a construction with linear interpolation in one direction and local means for the other. The new estimator outperforms earlier non‐parametric methods in the literature for the considered model. We investigate its finite sample size characteristics in simulations and draw a comparison between various proposed methods.

《论语》作为一部儒家经典,不仅对中国的思维方式和文化产生了深远影响,而且对其进行直接英译或对其内容诠释已成 为近年来诸多学者对中国典籍青睐的一种时尚。因局限于译者视角或理解的断章取义,致使其对同一名词翻译也不尽相同。 本着英文翻译理念——“最贴近的自然对等”,并参据词汇对等,选取了《论语》中两个十分具有文化内涵的“君子”和“小人”进 行分析,梳理了两者的英译现状,同时指出了某些翻译的不足并尝试给出更合适的英译。     

On tail behaviour of kth upper order statistics under fixed and random sample sizes via tail equivalence

For a fixed positive integer k, limit laws of linearly normalized kth upper order statistics are well known. In this article, a comprehensive study of tail behaviours of limit laws of normalized kth upper order statistics under fixed and random sample sizes is carried out using tail equivalence which leads to some interesting tail behaviours of the limit laws. These lead to definitive answers about their max domains of attraction. Stochastic ordering properties of the limit laws are also studied. The results obtained are not dependent on linear norming and apply to power norming as well and generalize some results already available in the literature. And the proofs given here are elementary.     

从奈达的“对等”理论看译者的追求

译者追求的不同能反映出译者的翻译观,会牵涉到译文的标准,当然会产生不同的译文.奈达翻译理论的核心思想是"对等"理论,依靠读者反应确定译文的优劣,但不是追求与原语完全一致.其他中外翻译家也表达过类似的观点,许多翻译实例都可以体现追求与原语"完全一致"的译文的弊病.译者应该追求"最贴切的最自然的对等表达",译文应该符合读者的阅读习惯,而不应该是贴近或照搬原语的表达方式.     

A new method for finding hierarchical subgroups from networks

We present a new method for decomposing a social network into an optimal number of hierarchical subgroups. With a perfect hierarchical subgroup defined as one in which every member is automorphically equivalent to each other, the method uses the REGGE algorithm to measure the similarities among nodes and applies the k-means method to group the nodes that have congruent profiles of dissimilarities with other nodes into various numbers of hierarchical subgroups. The best number of subgroups is determined by minimizing the intra-cluster variance of dissimilarity subject to the constraint that the improvement in going to more subgroups is better than a network whose n nodes are maximally dispersed in the n-dimensional space would achieve. We also describe a decomposability metric that assesses the deviation of a real network from the ideal one that contains only perfect hierarchical subgroups. Four well known network data sets are used to demonstrate the method and metric. These demonstrations indicate the utility of our approach and suggest how it can be used in a complementary way to Generalized Blockmodeling for hierarchical decomposition.
